Has anyone heard anything at all about need-based aid yet? Seems strange that it's almost April and only a few weeks away from their deposit deadline and they haven't awarded any need-based aid AFAIK.

For those who deposited, why did you choose Davis over other schools, such as Hastings?

So i personally chose Davis for a few reasons.politibro44 wrote:For those who deposited, why did you choose Davis over other schools, such as Hastings?
1) Employment numbers. 69.9% employment for Davis vs. 41.6% employment from Hastings.
2) Scholarship Money. Davis was much more generous with their scholarship offers and blew Hasting's offer out of the water despite Davis being ranked significantly higher.
3) Location. Although Davis is still a pretty small college town, it's a great area and the cost of living is a fraction of what I would be paying to live in SF and attend Hastings.
There are a few other reasons as well but the above reasons are what made the decision so easy. Better employment outcomes, better scholarship offers, cheaper cost of living.

Also, I just got a good vibe when I visited and took a tour. I didn't apply to Hastings, but one of my choices was Irvine, and Irvine did not stack up after I visited both. But I'm a person who goes off of gut feelings a lot of the time, and Davis just felt right.

Regarding cost of living, are you all looking at living alone or are you going to take on rooommates? I'm looking at 1 bedrooms now that are running $1300 (ouch). You can find them slightly cheaper without washer/Dreyer in unit, but for me in unit is essentially a necessity.

Re: UC Davis c/o 2018 Applicants (2014-2015 cycle)
I'm actually living with my girlfriend so my situation is a little bit different. 1,300 seems to be the going rate but like you said, if you sacrifice some space and washer/dryer etc. you can cut down on that.orpheus03 wrote:Regarding cost of living, are you all looking at living alone or are you going to take on rooommates? Interesting. I was sort of regretting not applying to Irvine, but I just really don't want to be in SoCal after school. This makes me feel better about that decision.
I also have a similar gut feeling when it comes to Davis and want to trust it. However, when talking to practicing attorneys a lot don't have much to say about Davis, but pretty much universally recognize Hastings as a solid school. I am meeting with a King Hall alum soon, so hopefully they can sell me on Davis. I am also waiting to attend both ASW's....speaking of, who is going to be in Davis on April 11? Or for the Sac admitted students/alumni mixer on April 10?

Re: UC Davis c/o 2018 Applicants (2014-2015 cycle)
I actually think the perception in the industry is changing regarding Davis/ Hastings. I had heard the opposite when i talked to a Partner at a major LA firm who believed Davis was a "very solid school." Hastings is definitely more recognizable at the moment but it's hard to ignore the clear shift that is taking place. Davis is climbing and Hastings is falling.politibro44 wrote:zfletch74 wrote:+1adbm29 wrote:So i personally chose Davis for a few reasons.politibro44 wrote:For those who deposited, why did you choose Davis over other schools, such as Hastings?

Yeah if you search for Davis v Hastings on this site you'll find a lot of discussions of how Hastings has declined pretty significantly in the past several years, especially with regards to employment outcomes. I'm not depositing at Davis but if I was one it would be for similar reasons as posters above: 1) they offered significantly more money than Hastings, and 2) they have better employment prospects. I can't speak that much to the reputation of one vs the other but if you just look at the outcomes, clearly one is placing better than the other

Got my scholarship packet via email! I was surprised they offered more than Hastings and University of Washington!

+1
I also didn't want to live in SoCal anymore. Davis seems like a place I could get studying done without being too far from SF/Sacramento on weekends/breaks. Also the scholarship didn't even compare to Hastings. I wanted to initially go there, but I was so disappointed with their lowball offer.
I feel like the reputation of Hastings is well regarded among the older attorneys I've spoken with. But clearly Davis is doing something right with those employment numbers. I'm so excited to start in the fall!

How do you guys think UCD compares to ASU? I have similar scholarship $ from both, and am having a really difficult time in deciding! I am from Nor Cal but don't really need to end up back there.

While looking through the other graduate programs offered by UC Davis, I noticed that Avian Sciences is an offered program. My dream of becoming THE global expert in Bird Law is about to come true.
