I have a friend who got in off the waitlist as one of the last ones, literally a couple weeks ago. She was all set in NYU, had moved in already, and packed up overnight and moved to Cambridge.

Waiting is fine... I plan on a bunch of it, I just really hope I'm not waiting come August. I'll be applying around Halloween. You guys planning on applying in 6 days?

I would be happy to get in whenever. Obviously I would rather not wait until next August but I would leave even after classes had started to get into one of the T3.

I've met at least two people here (and apparently there are a few more) who were accepted during orientation week and had been attending Columbia. Columbia was already 2-3 weeks into classes at the time. It definitely happens.

I'm gonna second this. I think you'll really hurt your chances applying in January. I applied Dec 20 and got decision March 1. Doesn't seem so bad, but I think January might be a bit too far.

If you already have an LSAT score, submit your application and let them know you're retaking. They're gonna see your current LSAT score anyway, regardless

My personal worry with this is that I think I may go straight to the rejected pile with my score of 167. I'm taking October, so I figure getting it in in very early November is okay?

I think they were referring to January applications. November is definitely early enough if you look through last year's applicant thread

AFAIK URMs don't get much benefit from applying early versus later. They try to accept all their higher number bros early on so they can see how many URM bros they can grab later in the cycle.

Do the Dec scores come out faster than the other admins? I thought it was ~3 weeks for scores to come out, and was all panicked about having to submit at the very very end of Dec/beginning of Jan if I have to retake.

Any other people who were in this situation last cycle have any advice? Is the general consensus to submit your app first if you're retaking in Dec? TY everyone (:

Even if the Dec score comes out in December, it's usually right before Christmas and they won't start looking at the new flood of Dec retakers until January anyway.

You mentioned above that you sent out your apps in Jan. Did you take the LSAT in Dec? If so, did you send in your app sans LSAT ahead of time? Or did you send in everything at once?

ETA: And are there reasons you don't rec sending in Jan (besides the obvious diminished chances at admission)?

I wish I would have sent in apps early, but no, I didn't. Decreased chances of admission combined with delayed responses from schools, as well as the huge problem that is most of the scholarships are given out in the fall. You also don't get much choice of where you want to live, you end up paying multiple seat deposits as deadlines pass... The list goes on.

If that didn't scare you enough, check out my cycle on LSN. 175/4.0/army, and I got in off the waitlist partly because of my late app.

Oh, God I knew about scholarships etc. but when you put it like that... Just makes me want to buckle down and study nonstop for October. Thanks so much for the advice, it is sincerely appreciated. Really kicked my ass into gear. Would you recommend something as drastic as sitting out the cycle if we decide to retake Dec? Just to get the best chances at money, admission, etc.

Depends where you end up. At HLS, your financial aid will be the same regardless
