1) Awesome name
2) So, you think that Mich admissions is purely numbers-based? A lot of evidence I've seen suggests otherwise...

No school is "purely" numbers based. At the same time, the idea that Michigan is the gold standard of "holistic" admissions and their adcoms go over every app with a fine-tooth comb looking beyond the numbers - is utter bunk and a result of the same kind of propaganda that fools applicants into attending schools with poor employment prospects.GirlStop wrote:@ ChampagnePapi

I think it's pretty clear from the data we have that Michigan is neither Berkeley nor NYU -- ie not ridiculously "holistic" and not a pure numbers game. What surprises me is UM is actually a lot closer to Berkeley than NYU.ChampagnePapi wrote:No school is "purely" numbers based. I don't think anyone is arguing UM is "the gold standard of 'holistic' admissions," just that it's on the more holistic side of the equation.

NYU isn't a peer of Michigan when it comes to admissions. A better comparison would be Penn:Yukos wrote:I think it's pretty clear from the data we have that Michigan is neither Berkeley nor NYU -- ie not ridiculously "holistic" and not a pure numbers game. Penn has a similar spread and yet Michigan is the school that gets the undeserved reputation as being more holistic because of handwritten notes (and we don't even know if Dean Z ACTUALLY writes those).

Any chance we receive a decision before November is over, or am I thinking wishfully?

Great chance. Almost no chance we'll hear this month though.JedBartlett wrote:Any chance we receive a decision before November is over, or am I thinking wishfully?

Edit: Are you sure this is correct? It has people being accepted into Yale in November/December (I've heard Yale doesn't accept until March...or am I wrong?)

A couple things:
1) It's based on LSN data, which obviously is self-inputted. It's very possible people mistyped/lied about acceptances.
2) I'm not sure over what period of years this data is for. Obviously when the Y app opens in mid-October/November (like this year), it's not likely decisions will come in November. Maybe Y's app opened earlier before?
3) A good portion of Y's acceptances come through "presumptive admits" or whatever it's called, which skip the faculty review process. It seems reasonable that the turn around on these would be quick.
Moral of the story: take this with a grain of salt, especially if it looks like there were <10 decisions in a given month. But it's a helpful and reassuring guide.
ETA: Bolded was backwards. </3 math

Yeah, it seems like the LSN data really breaks down in reliability when you're looking at anything more than admissions outcomes. Most people don't seem to know how to (or simple care not to) enter information other than rejected, waitlisted, or accepted. Very few people seem to come back and update whether or not they were accepted off the waitlist, and even fewer people seem to report dates in the cycle very accurately. And I really dislike how there isn't a clear consensus on how to report scholarship data (while TLSers seem to like the full, 3-year total, a lot of LSN profiles include per year scholarships.)Yukos wrote:A couple things:

Outside of predicting straight up rejects or admits, LSN should definitely be taken with a huge grain of salt.

Some people definitely get accepted in Nov. I think mine was the first or second week, but i was also an ED applicant, so grain of salt etc.

True, although I seem to recall people getting in around the time my ED was accepted, which was the last day of November last year. Probably will be some decisions within a few weeks.BuckinghamB wrote:Some people definitely get accepted in Nov. I'll definitely be following. Hopefully the obvious "when will the first decisions come out?" question will be asked and directly answered!Lawlschool2015 wrote:Stalking Dean Z's blog. Anyone on twitter planning to participate? http://www.law.umich.edu/connection/a2z ... spx?ID=103

"Am I in?" is less than 140 characters. Who's bold enough?02889 wrote:I'll definitely be following. Hey guys,
This is somewhat random, but I want to update Michigan with a new extracurricular that is fairly important I've started. Should I just email them a new resume or what?

I'd just write them a brief note, attach it to a Porsche, and have it delivered to the dean of admissions.JedBartlett wrote:Hey guys,

Or yeah, just send them a quick e-mail with the new info and an updated resume. Standard stuff.
