Re: Held at Columbia 2011
lol what are you guys all writing in your LOCIs? I don't know what to say because not much has happened to me that will add to my application. columbia is my top choice though... (after harvard stanford and yale of course LOl jk its actually my top choice) but i dont have any substantial reasons to back it up. anyone else in this predicament?
edit: after really thinking about it... i couldn't really think of any good reasons why columbia would be my top choice. and it honestly isn't. lol i just really wanted to get in. it's one of my top choices but i don't think it's my top just yet. and i ended up not writing that LOCI.

I plan on writing about how my family is in New York. That's really all I got that's not "dude your school is ranked real high"

Re: Held at Columbia 2011
I had job/academic updates, but I devoted a paragraph to the programs/grad placement Columbia has and how that lines up with my career goals. Since I didn't do a tailored PS for Columbia in my app, this kind of serves as my "Why Columbia."glitched wrote:lol what are you guys all writing in your LOCIs? Re: Held at Columbia 2011
Why is it your top choice then? Why do you want to attend if you have no substantive reasons? What about the school is appealing to you? (Not trying to pry, I'm trying to get you to think out loud in order to help draft your LOCI)glitched wrote:lol what are you guys all writing in your LOCIs? PDF-there should be an option in Word to save as PDF. If not, I think you can download an add-on for free that will allow you to save as PDF.agora139 wrote:for LOCIs, what format did you guys send it in? word doc attachment or pdf? i dont know how to convert to pdf...

i sent a hardcopy via snail mail--i've heard this ensures that they actually stick it in your file, eliminating the step where someone in their office has to print it out

I was under the impression that LOCIs should be in the body of the email since some schools don't open attachments.

That's definitely HLS' policy, I know. But for CLS, I'm pretty sure they told me attachments were fine during my call.Hannibal wrote:I was under the impression that LOCIs should be in the body of the email since some schools don't open attachments.

CLS confirmed they received mine and added it to my file--I sent my UVA one in as a PDF attachment as well.Confused7 wrote:That's definitely HLS' policy, I know. Re: Held at Columbia 2011
Sorry if this has been asked already, but who should we address it to? Like "Dear...?" And should it be kept to one page?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Probably one page--I'd address it to whoever signed your held letter.cherry17 wrote:Sorry if this has been asked already, but who should we address it to? Like "Dear...?" And should it be kept to one page?

Re: Held at Columbia 2011
can anyone articulate the difference between those who are "held" and those who applied ED but were "held for review until april". i'm quite confused.

Re: Held at Columbia 2011
Now, I don't know anything more than you do, but to me "held for review until April" sounds more like a waitlist...although perhaps a priority waitlist of sorts. Technically, people who have been "held" are still being reviewed currently and should have another decision (accept/ding/WL) by April. At some point in April, they'll check whether they have any more spots to offer, and if they do then perhaps they look at ED candidates before RD candidates off the waitlist.expat17 wrote:can anyone articulate the difference between those who are "held" and those who applied ED but were "held for review until april". i'm quite confused.

if anyone from tls that is on the held list heard something back, it would be big news and we would all know about it.ringdabell wrote:Has anybody been held heard back from them yet?

Re: Held at Columbia 2011
For those of you who were held and submitted an LOCI...what did you add to it to make it differ from your Why Columbia Essay, assuming you wrote one? I'm having trouble crafting an LOCI without regurgitating my Why CLS.

Re: Held at Columbia 2011
Mine involved some regurgitation (nicely re-worded), some info about what I've been up to since I applied, and some "I swear to God Columbia's my first choice and I will give you my first born child if you let me in and also most definitely will attend." ...or maybe a slight variation on that.RJ127 wrote:For those of you who were held and submitted an LOCI...what did you add to it to make it differ from your Why Columbia Essay, assuming you wrote one? Re: Held at Columbia 2011
Honestly, my LOCI was: These are the best offers I have right now. It is my intention to forgo these offers to attend Columbia if admitted.RJ127 wrote:For those of you who were held and submitted an LOCI...what did you add to it to make it differ from your Why Columbia Essay, assuming you wrote one? do people usually write Why Columbia's? I was under the impression those were only for schools like Penn/Mich/Duke/UVa...?

I also don't remember such a question, although I addressed it in my PS...gatorgirl4life wrote:do people usually write Why Columbia's? I was under the impression those were only for schools like Penn/Mich/Duke/UVa...?

Re: Held at Columbia 2011
I didn't originally, but I treated my LOCI as a Why Columbia (along with a resume update).gatorgirl4life wrote:do people usually write Why Columbia's? I was under the impression those were only for schools like Penn/Mich/Duke/UVa...?

Re: Held at Columbia 2011
I did it because financially, I had to save money to apply to schools and missed the ED deadline, so I reiterated that in my "Why CLS". Kind of like "I would have ED'd, but your boy is broke but here's an essay to prove you're still my #1".gatorgirl4life wrote:do people usually write Why Columbia's?
