Re: Penn c/o 2017 Applicants (2013-2014 cycle)
For those being WL, did you write any of Penn's optional essays or tailor your application in any way to Penn? Seems like some of these candidates could have easily gotten in by numbers. Any chance Penn is just looking for more commitment from applicants?

The one that says the drop to 169 medians will hurt 170+ splitters. I was talking about this a while back in the medians thread, but I was thinking that perhaps as medians dropped, splitters with 170+ LSATs would actually become a bit less valuable to schools in the mid-T14, since now they could consider all the many more new people with 169's and above median GPA's that before were below the LSAT median. Now they could admit the 169/3.8 instead of needing to choose the 171/3.6.The-Specs wrote:which one?lawschool22 wrote:One of my theories is playing itself out at V and P today.ohpobrecito wrote:Yes sirlawschool22 wrote:Penn's median dropped to 169 right?

Also, for those TLS scholars out there, does Penn ever directly WL someone from ED, or are they deferred to RD pool first?

Seems more like the general pool now.
Looking at the activity on LSN shows that the vast majority are splitters and reverse splitters. Looks like the floor for LSAT is around 164 for high GPA apps
Edit: Floor to get wait-listed*

Are 169, sub-median GPAs just getting dings in the bloodbath of '14?

I'm a reverse splitter with less than a 164 and close to a 4.0 awaiting my denial emailt14splitter wrote:ttime97 wrote:It does seem like a lot, right? Do you have a guess why that would be?t14splitter wrote:Is it just me or does it seem like a disproportionate number of these WLs are URMs?

No worries, just a victim of my own theories lol.HOS wrote:

This theory I felt would really play itself out most at the classic yield protect schools like Penn and UVA. And I think that's what we're seeing. They can afford to be even more stingy with the 170+ splitters, because (a) they don't think you'll go there anyway, and (b) now they just accept the 169 who they KNOW will go to V and P, because the 169 is not nearly as likely to get CCN.
But since it's partly a YP play, i figured it would probably come at us in the form of waitlists as opposed to outright dings, which is what we're seeing so far.

I was WL. URM with both below 25th percentile numbers.
12/3 UR1
1/7 UR2
Wrote a brief Why Penn but didn't discuss my actual visit and tour of the school. Will utilize that in a LOCI and send am additional LOR prior to the WL deadline.

Re: Penn c/o 2017 Applicants (2013-2014 cycle)
Okay, some info from last year:
There was a lot of action the Thursday and Friday before the long weekend. On Friday, there was a big wave of acceptances early in the day, followed by a relatively large wave of rejections and waitlists later on. So, tomorrow is looking like a huge day.
ED II people: Last year, it looks like most ED II decisions (admit, hold, WL, reject) were released on Tuesday, January 29th. Some didn't hear until early February (!), despite what the contract stipulates.

I've been waiting to go complete for 2 weeks now - maybe that's a good thing since I can consider myself "spared" from the bloodbath today?
