I'll bet all the peeps who checked their status through ASW went through (and continue to go through) far more stress than they would have had they just waited. Irony at its best.

Don't know if it's been said already, my admit email says letters were mailed on 1/24. Just FYi...

No, these are all the people that hacked. Plus the couple of VCE's.TheRedMamba wrote:did all of those people actually receive VCEs? I see a couple WCs ...Tiago Splitter wrote:soj wrote:snehpets wrote:Form: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/vie ... a3FaY2c6MQ

Hoping and praying the "hack" wasn't accurate and they are still updating their database is much much worse than just crossing my fingers for a VCE. Now I kind of just feel like I'm believing in something that I rationally know isn't going to happen.lsatcrazy wrote:I'll bet all the peeps who checked their status through ASW went through (and continue to go through) far more stress than they would have had they just waited. It's like trying to convince myself that I haven't seen too much and that Santa Claus actually exists. It's a futile exercise.

LOL, very liberal use of the term "hacked". Stop being alarmist.JoeMo wrote:

Glad that all got cleared up. Mad props to Columbia for staying classy.

Re: Columbia c/o 2015 Applicants (2011-2012 cycle)
This whole "hacking" argument is ridiculous. Hacking requires often some sort of illegal intrusion. Now I find it difficult for someone to say that hacking consists of accessing a "general" admit section and then trying out your own info in another section of that general section to see whether you've been admitted. What did you exactly hack? Was it mentioned anywhere that this "general" admit section was NOT to be used by anyone other than the admit? That would be pretty strange. As a weak example, say my scholarship fund wanted to see my admit student website for columbia, is it illegal for them to access it? Is it illegal for them to type in information to test the enrollment section? Is it even unethical? I reason that it's none of the above unless Columbia explicitly states to applicants, "this is proprietary information that must be kept solely to you and you may not share this website, password, or any other information we provide in this document with anyone else." The whole Harvard thing was a bit different--it required sophistication and actually devising new hyperlinks. In this case it's simply roaming around a "general" admit site that as far as I know has not been deemed by Columbia to be inaccessible to anyone but admits and testing your information against a database. You're not intruding, you're not putting in new information, you're not doing anything to the system....
(As an aside, we aren't even sure whether what they saw or didn't see was an acceptance or not. It's pure speculation.)

Just to add one more thing. I think many of those who scream "hacking," or "unethical" or whatever critical categorization they can come up with are those who were disappointed with their own "failed" attempt at not being able to access what the putatively accepted had accessed. To be honest, no one really knows whether or not they got in until they got a VCE.

So, on a different note, I haven't heard a word from Columbia in about 2-1/2 months. Think it would be annoy them/slow them down to throw a "why columbia" statement their way?

I do to, but I doubt anything will come of it. Nothing happened in bad faith, as far as I know. I think those that tried to get in but failed were under the assumption that the site was similar to Michigan ASW, access to which was known to be completely OK.FryBreadPower wrote:Bleh. in other words, we didn't think CLS had a problem with it, which is very different than what happened at hbs

Oh, I'm 99% sure there will be no negative consequences that come from this. I more wish this didn't happen because of the mindset it created for me. What ended up going down felt far worse than not getting a VCE would have felt.JamMasterJ wrote:I do to, but I doubt anything will come of it. Nothing happened in bad faith, as far as I know. I was having a PM convo with another person like us about 20 minutes ago.
I think the end of the cycle is when we will really see a ton of movement.
I think I posted this here or in another c/c 2015 thread yesterday:

I noticed there are no December submits on the spreadsheet.. could it be possible we just aren't hearing back yet?

Sorry, didn't mean to be alarmist, just thought that was the term being thrown around a few pages back. Truth be told, I also "hacked" but didn't get in. So I'm not saying there was anything wrong with what was done. If anything, I give mad props to the person that had enough forethought to find that small a$$ clue. In my eyes, he/she should be an auto-admit for thinking like a LAWYER!Hawkeye Pierce wrote:LOL, very liberal use of the term "hacked". Stop being alarmist.JoeMo wrote:

It's really not that serious. They're not going to do anything about it. They're just a bit more protective than say Dean Z. who gets a kick out of the whole situation.

JoeMo wrote:I'm OK. I wasn't--and am not--stressed out. I just didn't appreciate when you said "hack" because I didn't think the use of that word was apt, and I suspected, at the time you wrote it, that you didn't actually mean it in a geeky, complimentary way (eg that was a cool hack those MIT kids did by putting that car up on that building). Anyway, it's just a hunch, and that's why I responded to your use of the word "hack" in the way I did. If you really meant it as a joke, then I apologize.tempur_three wrote: tl to quote
