Received scholarship today, a little stingy. I'm pretty disappointed as I have received more $$$ to schools with a better ranking. I'd really like to go to Duke, how soon is it okay to begin the negotiation process?

I think duke does that because they're located in a low COL area. so 100K at Duke >>> 100K at like, NU or Michigan.

This is the case. A 80k scholarship goes farther at Duke than 150k at say Penn. The cost of living in Durham is amazing, its great. As far as Nixon goes, we are only 1 of three law schools I believe with a President-Yale Harvard and Duke. While Nixon might not be the most well-regarded Prez, at least he isn't the worst any more! Also, by all accounts he was a great law student when he was here. His problems much later in life didn't necessarily materialize here from what some professors in the know describe.

In addition, somewhere around 80%+ of students get scholarships. They share the love rather than having a majority of students subsidize the schollies/tuition like at other schools.

That might have been pushing it, but 70k difference in COA over 3 years between Durham and Philly could offset it (with the assumption that you are paying whatever the scholarship doesn't cover in tuition and COA with loans). A lot of law students share a house (usually fairly large, backyard, etc) for 400-500 a month. I assume philly is 1200+ for a 1 bedroom around Upenn if not more, that already is 12-15k difference in COA per year. So maybe I was a little broad with the numbers, but given the cost of living in Durham compared to a city, the numbers work out as this example explains.

Another example: my friend at Georgetown law pays 2k in rent a month for a studio apartment/utilities/etc that is a 15 minute train ride from the school. I pay 500 and my roommate pays 500 for a 4 bedroom house in Durham literally walking distance to campus. I have a bedroom and an office just because it is so cheap. He pays 24k in rent a year, I pay 6k. That difference right there is 18k in rent alone a year times 3 years, 54k extra in COA purely for housing. Plus food is generally more expensive in cities, etc.

Given those real numbers in cost of living, would you rather get a 120k scholarship at GT or 80k at Duke? Cost of living wise, you actually come out worse going to GT (plus its a TTTT) even though it appears to be cheaper.

No problem! I will be honest and say there are some new apartment buildings really close to the law school that charge more, like 800-1k for a 1 bedroom, but you can find a nice house for that price as well. And Durham is starting to become a hotspot for food & there are a bunch of great local microbreweries so Durham might not be a city, but it is certainly not the backwater.

Cincinnati had Taft so TTTs get a win IUPUI might see its first president here in a bit, though... Pence is actually the second vice president out of IUPUI, interestingly enough. Not really attributing their political success to IUPUI, as much as them being bona fide conservatives from a dark red midwestern state

edit: on the CoL conversation, I am really going to have to crunch the number I feel like because Duke probably won't be my biggest scholly in the T14 outright, but might still be cheaper than my other options

Did anyone else get a letter recently from Dean Levi with minimal information besides congratulations and a sales pitch for Duke Law? It also came with a brochure titled "3 Questions for the Dean." I ripped open the envelope hoping it was a scholarship letter only to be disappointed

Just had my scholarship interview. Honestly, it felt really weird. Not the best interview I've had at all. But maybe it was mostly that I just don't really love Duke
