Okay, great. Thanks for the feedback. That's what I assumed, but it would suck to arrive at a distinctly cutthroat campus without knowing ahead of time.
As you can see, Eladriel, I'm still weighing my options, lol.

Re: Columbia c/o 2018 Applicants (2014-2015 cycle)
I would proffer my statements as direct testimony: it's a myth. CLS has no more of a negative competitive atmosphere than any other law school. Probably chiller than many.Eladriel wrote:0L, so I can only provide hearsay. I spoke with (1) friends who went there, (2) friends who are recent alumni, (3) a random former classmate from my college whom I recognized at ASW, and (4) CLS students individually in class and on the ASW tours.ub3r wrote:The other day I heard someone mention how competitive Columbia students are with each other, as if it were a commonly known thing about Columbia. But it was the first time I'd heard it. Is anyone ITT able to comment on how much truth is there to that stereotype?
I mean, I get that biglaw farm = competitive, hard-working students. But is it actually a pronounced, toxic sort of thing at Columbia or just a facet of any top tier law school?
None of them said it was competitive. All of them said the opposite. Some of them even said that the people who are "competitive" in the sense we think of it (refusing to share notes, requiring applications to study groups, refusing to study with people) are ostracized by the rest of the student body.
Again, all hearsay though.

Even if it's true.. (which I doubt) we have the power now to decide not to be like that. If those of us who get admitted want to make a 1L student body that's caring, supportive, and team-oriented, I think that is very much an attainable goal.

The first time I heard this rumor was, ironically enough, from a CLS admission officer.yot11 wrote:Credited.Mack.Hambleton wrote:I heard they rip pages out if books at the library at CLS so other students can't study

I'm pretty sure that kind of behaviour is possible at any law school, irrespective of how prestigious the school is.
To whom it may concern, I created a thread for this year's Reserve group:

LSAT at median & GPA slightly above 75th.
Admitted last Friday!
I'm sorry to cut in while people are talking about the "Columbia students being so competitive" myth, but here's how my application went, in case any potential admits are wondering:
01/29: Submit
01/30: Complete
03/20: Admit through e-mail (no interview)
Urg it took so much time, but finally.. I read somewhere that Columbia only notifies through mail, but they might be e-mailing applicants toward the end of the cycle in order to give them some time before the deposit deadline.
Congratulations and good luck everyone!

I feel like no matter the law school, if anyone was actually caught doing this, there would be a murder. Straight up an entire class would get 20 to life.

Fortunately we all as law students know how to get away with murder.zhenders wrote:I feel like no matter the law school, if anyone was actually caught doing this, there would be a murder. Straight up an entire class would get 20 to life.

This rumor is ridiculous. I'm guessing Mack.Hambleton was trolling, but it does seem like there are some people that actually believe this.Mack.Hambleton wrote:I heard they rip pages out if books at the library at CLS so other students can't study
First of all, no one sabotages each other here. There's plenty of jobs to go around for CLS students.
Second, why the hell would ripping a page out of a library book affect anyone else's studying? This isn't 1975. People own their textbooks and supplements. If you were relying all semester on a library book and a page got ripped out, you could ask one of your friends for the book and photocopy it. You could order it on Amazon. You could tell the librarian and they would order a new copy.
The only classes where this would affect anything would maybe be seminars where a book was required for research, but even then there's no incentive to be competitive because our seminar curve is very generous.

Weird how many parents were at ASW. Even weirder how many asked random pointless questions. I guess to each his own.

Seriously - this sort of weirded me out. I sort of got the vibe that a bunch of K-JD parents were like "My child got in to the Ivy League, time for the grand tour!"DCfilterDC wrote:Weird how many parents were at ASW. Even weirder how many asked random pointless questions. I guess to each his own.
...or maybe just were excited to go to NYC. But I know even if we made a vacation out of it, my parents would have the sense to stay away from ASW.

Yeah it's totally normal to come out to the city on vacation but to come to all the events including meals and then ask random questions your child could clearly ask was weird to me. Gave me a bad vibe considering other schools I visited and next to no parents there.
