Deferred today with a 3.5/174. What can I do to increase my chances of admission? Is there really no chance I'll hear anything before February? Cornell is my top choice...

I almost don't believe you. Is there something really bad in your app? Crimes, etc.? I mean, deferrals happen to even high numbers people, but its strange since everyone in your range is in on LSN, and last year there were only a few WL and one strange reject in that area.

Did you do every rational addendum? We basically need to know a lot more to help you on that question.

I don't have any diversity to speak of, so I didn't write a diversity essay. I did include a resume, and a personal statement.

I don't have much by way of community service involvement, and nothing substantial to speak of in terms of academic honors. I'm figuring that's what doomed me? I'm happy to provide any information you'd like.

I'd ask in the proper forums and stuff, but I don't know what to tell you, unless you are really young (a Junior or something) or have something bad on your record. OR your PS/anything else is written very poorly. How much time did you put in to it? Did you have lots of others edit/re-edit? I've been told by folks who are on admissions boards in two of the top 4 chicago law schools that a poorly written PS with a couple grammatical errors can doom folks.

Did your PS really emphasize Cornell? if so, I could see that they might defer you for now, waiting to see the quality of applicants. Also, maybe that community service stuff does matter a ton- but its usually secondary to scores and you are at 25th (gpa) and WAY above 75th on LSAT so you should be almost an auto in.

If none of that is the case, I'd relax and wait it out. I'm sure you'll get admitted.

Accepted on Monday. Going to withdraw though, because of other options, so hopefully this will help someone out. :D

Congratulations to those receiving acceptances. Today is my one month anniversary of "Processing." At this rate I should be in... right about the time I graduate with my JD from some other school.

Thanks for the thoughts, Remnant. I'm not young, and have nothing bad on my record. I wouldn't have thought my PS was poorly written, but I guess I can't be sure? When you say "the proper forums," would you mind directing me there? I'm new to the boards, as my name implies...

Also, does anyone have any specific advice as to what I should submit to bolster my chances of admission between now and February? Again, Cornell really is my top choice: because of location, it's actually the only place I want to be. I wouldn't get in at HarvardYaleStanford, but would choose Cornell over them because of factors related to my personal life. Should I emphasize this to the admissions committee?

Because you were deferred with CCN-worthy numbers.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
