Is your username a reference to Mikhail Bakhtin? If so, you're awesome.ScarryBakhtin wrote:r6, I'm still looking forward to hearing your impressions of Berkeley campus...

You, too, are awesome. Yes, and the Scarry is a reference to Elaine Scarry, a less influential, but equally inspiring scholar. I'm actually writing my thesis on Bakhtin's early essay "Author and Hero in Aesthetic Activity," are you familiar?

Oh, Bakhtin... brings back memories of last-minute struggles to understand film theory readings on the BART

Re: Berkeley 2011 applicants
Wow, I thought the Scarry reference might be to her. I read her excellent takedown of Alan Dershowitz' defense of torture in an undergrad class. And I remember reading some Bakhtin in a class about Dostoevsky, but I don't know much of his work. Anyway, best of luck to you during the cycle. We can talk aesthetic theory at an ASW.ScarryBakhtin wrote:You, too, are awesome. Yes, and the Scarry is a reference to Elaine Scarry, a less influential, but equally inspiring scholar. Looking forward. Hopefully, there will be some overlap in the selection of ASW's we attend. I spent too much time writing abstract essays and not enough time thinking about what I would do if by the time my senior year rolled around I had doubts about a future in academia. No regrets, though. See you on the other side.

A lot of concrete. Seriously, that's my impression for the law school corner. I like the other side of the campus with the UC sign and the view from the science center was lovely to say the least. I think once they remove all the construction equipment the law school area will be really nice. The quotes on the front of the building were really nice. It was nice inside of the building, arguably I like the inside of Boalt Hall better than inside of SLS. All in all, different. Plus, this Monday last year it looks like there was a batch of acceptances.

Looks like the first round of committee review notifications went out this week last year as well

What is committee review? I am currently under review, do I also have to go to committee review?
Sorry, submitted pretty late so haven't followed this thread till now.

From Berk law website FAQ:
Are all applications read? Is there a cutoff?
Each application is reviewed by the Dean of Admissions or by one of his associates. No applicant is automatically admitted or denied solely on the basis of test scores and grades. Some applicants are admitted immediately, while other competitive files are sent to the Admissions Committee for additional individual evaluation. The Committee is composed of faculty members and students who serve in an advisory capacity.
My understanding is that if your application goes to committee review you will receive an e-mail telling you so and giving a date to expect a decision by.

Thanks for that, hipster. So is it bad news that I've been Under Review since early November with no UCR? =/ I'm thinking I'm gonna get dinged or waitlisted sometime soon. My numbers are above/at the 75ths tho. Oh well.

If I've been UR since 11/1/10, with no change, is my fate more or less sealed?

No, Jinx. Several people have UR dates in October with very competitive numbers that Boalt loves, so I don't think a UR anywhere around Nov/Oct is a tell-tale sign that you're going to be dinged.

no one's fate is sealed until committee review happens and you are not in it.

Committee review? Pretty please? I promise to make classroom discussions interesting. And to occasionally bake cookies...

According the Chronicle, Brown plans to cut UC funding by $500 million. And there is the issue of some highly-compensated executives (including the dean of the law school) threatening to sue if their pensions are not increased. The instability is making it hard to consider the school as an option. What is going to happen over the next few years?

Isn't the law school large self-funded? I'd be surprised if the school is not feeding $ back into the parent university.sarahh wrote:According the Chronicle, Brown plans to cut UC funding by $500 million. The pension is going to have to be decreased, they just can't operate that way. Either raise taxes (contribution) or reduce benefits. Since they are not in any shape to raise taxes, benefit reduction seems like the way to go.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
