Do they give you an estimate of time before a decision, and has anyone had a decision after being held? Are you informed by status checker or email/mail/whatever?

We were all informed by email that we'd hear back by the 28th of February. Doesn't seem like any held applicants have gotten a decision yet.

I never realized, until this year when I started paying attention to GULC and DC, how frequently it closes/shuts down for weather. I would have figured they were fairly used to snow during the winter, or at least fully equipped to deal with it, it being our nation's capital and all.

It's true, we get them from Virginia and Maryland. It only snows a few times each winter, and up until a few years ago, rarely ever snowed at all. The city's still not used to the change. Also DC has one of THE most inefficient governments in the country, and it doesn't help that congress controls our budget, making it much harder to get anything new. FWIW, we're slated to get about 5 inches today, and possibly 8 by tomorrow.

I remember back before undergrad there were several times when school would shutdown the night before a large storm, there is little to no snow, yet everything has to remain closed. Snow cripples DC.

That's all really interesting to me. Even though they don't get much snow, you would still think that would be something the Capital would want to be prepared for, considering they seem to be prepared for almost any other eventuality.

I am surprised by how we all sling the typical DC stereotypes here. The city does have their own plows they recently bought a new fleet after 'Snowmageddon' where DC government was overwhelmed because a snow like that happens about once every one hundred years (think 100 year hurricane). With thirty inches of snow over just three days even the more experienced counterparts in Pennsylvania had issues. The Midwest and Northeast in general get a lot more snow and thus are more equipped to handle it spending a larger amount of capital and resources on their snow.

In the last few years D.C. has become more efficient with their snow removal and snow mitigation tools. D.C. is prepared for snow but when the city's population swells to over 1 million during a typical workday it is better safe than sorry situation to have people at home instead of the potential to snarl traffic and have mass injuries. Especially with technology today most people can work just as efficiently at home.

Most of D.C. government (local) inefficiencies come from the federal government so when you all become lawyers fight to allow D.C. to become autonomous of the federal government. Overall when allowed to handle their own affairs D.C. is very efficient and that shows with the reduced crime, increased economic development, and general welfare of its citizen in the last 20 years.

You can't forget that part of the reason Snowmaggeden was so bad was because the city used almost all of the salt on the paltry "snowstorm" a week before. I bike to work, so I'm glad to have the day off today, but we've gotten to the point where the city really should be better equipped to handle snow. And I don't know which part of DC's government you've dealt with, but "very efficient" is not how I'd describe the offices I've dealt with.
