Re: University of North Carolina 2013
First off, good luck to everyone still waiting!
About this police issue...
I've lived in NC since 1999. Seven years in Boone, the rest in Raleigh and now Durham. I've also worked at the state ACLU for five years, and we work on police corruption issues on a daily basis. We have the added perspective of having sister affiliates in all of the 50 states who work on the same issues we do (brutality/profiling/forfeiture/searches). Knowing what I do about them, I wouldn't say we're above average in terms of police corruption/harassment. I think we've got our share, certainly, particularly in some of the mountain counties mentioned, where sheriffs have a uniquely different idea of what that role entails. But that mentality persists throughout the southeast; it's definitely not unique to North Carolina.
Boone certainly has a rep, and well deserved, for aggressive drug enforcement. In 2002, the D.A. there tried to prosecute 7 meth cooks under federal anti-terrorism statutes (passed after 9/11) on the theory that they were "manufacturing chemical weapons." The old sheriff from that era, Mark Shook, had a bad rep as well for his anti-drug campaigns. It is also true that we are probably above the national average for sheriffs convicted of felonies while in office. Just do a google search and you will see many have gone to jail just in the past decade. But I also think we do a better job than most when it comes to cleaning up our messes. This past year, we had an entire police department fired (Spring Lake) and numerous corruption prosecutions. The state troopers have fired many troopers after an internal audit revealed some shady business. We also established the nation's first innocence commission to address wrongful convictions often resulting from police misconduct.
That said, police still shoot people with impunity in this state. The SBI definitely has a rep for rubberstamping any in custody death, as they've done on over a hundred in the past 10 years. I can only think of one case in that period where an officer was convicted for an in custody death, and he only got 2 years in prison. And we've definitely taken a step backwards in the past 3 years with the 287g immigration enforcement program that's been adopted in a number of counties, which has resulted in widespread profiling of hispanics and an enormous uptick in petty police harassment. I know for a fact that's caused real quality of life issues for hispanic Americans in certain communities. I get calls all the time from people who get stopped and asked to produce their papers.

Waitlisted.
If I had received this notice 6 weeks ago, I might have been more broken up over it. Now, I am almost indifferent. I won't be staying on the list, but good luck to those of you who choose to fight it out.
I'll pop in every now and then to smack talk UNC a little more with you guys.

Right there waiting with you. My facade of not worrying about UNC is crumbling.

No worries - I'm pretty happy with my other options, so I guess that softens the blow.jerzgrl630 wrote:i'm sorry dude. you seem pretty cool, i harbored some hopes of us being classmates one day!traehekat wrote:Around 8:00 PM CT.seanbickford wrote:Right there waiting with you. Total shame we won't be classmates, though. One thing UNC has going for it is a bunch of awesome applicants. Everyone in this thread has been pretty cool, whether or not they were accepted, and I'm sure it'll be a good class for UNC.

I'm still waiting. Applied back in October shortly after the application was available. I figured I would have heard by now. I'm in-state, 164/3.7 with 7 years work experience. Like many others, I'm pretty much indifferent by now, and plan to attend Wake. But it's just annoying that so many of us, especially those of us that applied back in October, are still waiting.

I'm not sure, but he's in his 50s, so probably. My aunt (his wife) told me that to make me feel better... It didn't work.Bedsole wrote:I would assume this was back when he was moving to Buies Creek, and not Raleigh?Scribbly wrote:+2 and I've been complete since 1/10. *Headdesk*jlnoa0915 wrote:+1, have been complete since 1/27. Waitlist via e-mail 10:28 p.m. Central.
161/3.5x, if anyone is curious.
Not one bit surprised, but I will definitely be riding this one out.
