Democrats have swept the presidential elections in both Durham and Albemarle counties for a while.

What North Carolina is to you, Virginia is to me. You guys win BBQ, though.

You don't even know. Come to North Florida, we are as southern as Georgia and Bama.
It really depends on the part of North Florida. My part isn't too southern.

Yeah. The really deep south is Louisiana (my other motherland), Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and parts of North Florida. Everywhere else is South-lite.

Agree mostly, but Tennessee is pretty damn Southern.
I'd agree, considering the Confederate States of America chose Tennessee's battle flag as their National Flag.

Sweet tea, grits and general awesome food, southern hospitality, y'all, guns, church, conservative generally, SEC football, country music, ect
In that case, what do you think are some of the worst qualities of the deep South?

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "traits," but it depends. Although they were forcibly brought here and slavery is one of the most deplorable things one human can do to another human, the Atlantic slave trade did result in a dynamic influx of West African and Caribbean influences. Everything from the blues to modern southern cooking can find its roots in the influx of those peoples. For a more specific example, look at Louisiana. You not only have the African influence, but you also have French, Spanish, and South American legacies that have left their mark, resulting in the Cajun and Creole cultures. It is a completely one-of-a-kind culture that does not exist anywhere else on the planet. It is also one of the great tragedies of Hurricane Katrina; New Orleans has never really recovered.

More recently, you have modern waves of Hispanics and Asians coming to the South. This is especially awesome for the culinary evolution of the South.

Poverty, bad education, obesity, "Murcia" mind set. Bad coffee, though that's changing :)

Not racism? (Genuinely curious.)

Race relations, but they are improving. Look at how Charleston came together after the shooting, that would have been impossible even 20-30 years ago.

Edit: To clarify, I agree with the General that it isn't an issue unique to the South. Cities such as Chicago and Baltimore have had their own issues.
