First - good luck to all those waiting. I hope all of you get in!

Weird question. I applied ED, and received a response in November. I went into my email today to read it (so as to start writing a LOCI), and it's gone. Maybe I woke up in the middle of the night in rage and got rid of it, who knows. Either way, I have no idea what my status is. I know I didn't get rejected -- does that mean deferred? Do they read my app again in April?

Guys: there are so many insanely well-qualified people who are probably just a few days shy of hearing that they're in.

Intelligent people are very adept at drawing inferences and noticing patterns. This can unnecessarily wreak havoc on the sanity of people who monitor these sites. Anecdotally I was the only person on TLS who reported a UR from UChi and Northwestern on a certain day, and my UR dates were supposedly a death sentence at Penn. I was positive I would get dinged at all three. I got into all three, on the first day that Chi released decisions and very delayed for Northwestern, with an atypical admittance date to Penn. Please, please, please retain hope and don't give in to your neuroses.

We have a YLS admit and several HLS and Stanford admits not yet in; we have crazy qualified URMs who haven't heard back; WhiteGuy5 will probably get in, but if not has an insanely compelling LOCI waiting if he doesn't get in; there are people with far better numbers than me who haven't yet heard.

I am not the person who hangs out on these boards and tells the ultra-splitters and the nice but numerically marginal people that "you're definitely in!", so please don't think I'm just offering super-happy-for-the-board-love-and-I-just-got-into-the-school-so-I'll-say-nice-things bullshit support. In this case it really is foolish to lose hope so early. I really think the earliest admits were arbitrarily selected, and people who have already given up hope will be hearing great news soon.

I can't wait to be proven right.

HBS interacts with applicants via a third-party site called ApplyYourself. Harvard had planned to notify applicants whether they had been admitted, on March 30. Somebody discovered last week that some applicants' admit/reject letters were already available on the ApplyYourself website. There were no hyperlinks to the letters, but a student who was logged in to the site could access his/her letter by constructing a special URL. Instructions for doing this were posted in an online forum frequented by HBS applicants. (The instructions, which no longer work due to changes in the ApplyYourself site, are reproduced here.) Students who did this saw either a rejection letter or a blank page. (Presumably the blank page meant either that HBS would admit the student, or that the admissions decision hadn't been made yet.) 119 HBS applicants used the instructions.

Harvard has now summarily rejected all of them, calling their action a breach of ethics.

I think this is the difference

It does kind of show that the first student was pretty clever though.

Truth, that was way more intense and it sounds like they had a single day where all admit decisions came out like undergrads. However, I did make a conscious effort only to try once because I was thinking about Dean Z's blog post that revealed that they could see how many times people tried (unsuccessfully) to get into the ASW... no reason to tempt fate. lol
