Quote obscured as requested. I interviewed for the Darrow a little over two weeks ago. Just got the financial aid email saying I didn't get the Darrow and offering a $150k Dean's Scholarship. That probably takes Michigan out of the running for me given that Columbia offered a Hamilton.180kickflip wrote:hear back...2 weeks...Darrow interview?
As elsewhere in this thread, it appears that Michigan is catching up on financial aid offers today.

Just got a Dean's scholly as well.. Find it strange they say they don't "compete" with other offers but past years say otherwise. Hope to get them to bump it up but gotta wait to get accepted elsewhere

Got $150K, which is not bad.
But "because your award covers such a considerable portion of tuition, you are ineligible for additional, need-based grants from the Law School."
Wait, what? I'd planned to rely on my merit-based aid to cover tuition and need-based to cover living expenses. Seems like I misunderstood the way things work.

I didn't get that much, and I'm ineligible. We can still get loans, but not grants, is my understanding. However, unless I can get them to bump it up, I'm not sure I can do that.strawberrieee wrote:Got $150K, which is not bad.

Yeah unfortunately it seems like most schools will not offer any need-based aid once a merit award gets high enough. But either way congrats on the $150K that's awesome!strawberrieee wrote:Got $150K, which is not bad.

"High enough" isn't always even a very good term. GWU won't give you need-base grants if you have more than $16k/year in merit aid, which is just over ¼ tuition. Georgetown also doesn't allow double dipping -- you will be disbursed either a need-based award or a merit-based award, but not both. They give whichever is higher, but it can swap if your need-based award drops below your merit-based award in future years.pittsburghpirates wrote:Yeah unfortunately it seems like most schools will not offer any need-based aid once a merit award gets high enough. Re: Michigan Law School C/O 2019 Applicants (2015-16)
That's my understanding as well. Essentially they now calculate your need based on a cost of COA less the $150k, and given that the maximum need-based grant award is (probably, roughly) half of COA, no one will be eligible for any need-based grants after the $150k is considered. You'll have to cover the rest with assets or loans.herecomesthesun wrote:I didn't get that much, and I'm ineligible. We can still get loans, but not grants, is my understanding. Congrats on the Hamilton!! I got the same dean's scholarship right after reading your message =) The 150 is pretty far away from a Darrow, but it's still a great offer, so I'm very happy to have it.FastRun wrote:Quote obscured as requested. Think it's possible to convert a 150k dean's scholarship to a Darrow? I wasn't given a Darrow interview, but that might have been because I applied late and was admitted very recently.

Re: Michigan Law School C/O 2019 Applicants (2015-16)
If the numbers on the first page of this thread are right, the total tuition and fees is ~160k, so I don't think anything but the Darrow would be more than that. And if I had to guess, 150k is probably the max for the dean's.strawberrieee wrote:Trying not to sound greedy, but anyone knows the max amount of a non-Darrow scholarship? $175K?
Being a nonresident alien I'm ineligible for fed loans, and I'll sure be raped on private loans' interest rates.

Re: Michigan Law School C/O 2019 Applicants (2015-16)
Total tuition and fees is right around $56k for out of state, so $150k over 3 years is only $18k shy of full tuition (assuming tuition doesn't go up, so say $20-25k conservatively). Maybe given your Fed loans situation you could convince them to bump the Dean's Scholarship that little bit to make it full tuition (couldn't hurt to ask), but I doubt you'd be able to get beyond that into stipend territory without a named award.Topszn wrote:Preachstrawberrieee wrote:Trying not to sound greedy, but anyone knows the max amount of a non-Darrow scholarship? $175K?

Is there maybe a Class of 2019 thread where people can complain about their scholarship offers? Some of us are still just hopeful for an admit and you guys are bumming us out.

Hey to be fair I'm an admit and they're also bumming me out. At the moment I can't even get Michigan to give me a dollar. If I got 150K I'd deposit today...Navyhornguy wrote:Is there maybe a Class of 2019 thread where people can complain about their scholarship offers? In last morning!
I heard Michigan is really unfriendly to internationals, so this comes as a huge surprise!

Hi all, I was recently invited to interview for the Darrow and was wondering whether anyone could give me some insight into what they ask/what they're looking for? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I got that infamous email a while back about my early application being held for whatever reason. >75 for both, didn't include any addenda. trying to decide if it's a yield thing.

What's the deal with Michigan's employment numbers? Michigan's rank has fallen precipitously over the years, and now their biglaw + fed clerk percentage is only 54%, almost as low as Georgetown's. Now that the recession is over, are things going to start looking up, or are these low placement stats something we should be worried about?

Re: Michigan Law School C/O 2019 Applicants (2015-16)
This has been explained by many Michigan students (even ITT I believe). Obviously they are biased, but they claim things are looking up. I am inclined to believe them if only for the fact Michigan has cut the class size by 1/3 since the last available jobs data. I personally would have no reservations about attending Michigan, although there are surely those who would.RZ5646 wrote:What's the deal with Michigan's employment numbers?
