On an unrelated note...

Has anyone had a chance to peek inside the tower apartments? Are the studios & efficiencies tiny? Would that extra 100 sq. ft. of space (and couple hundred $ in monthly rent, haha) in the studio make it that much more live-able than the efficiency?

To echo this point, can anyone report back on how ASD went? The good, the bad, etc. Maybe some tidbits for those of us on the WL.

Barring a hail-mary acceptance to USC or BC I'm heading to Hastings in the fall. Aside from the 4-ish block radius immediately around Hastings I love everything about the city. Hoping to live in the tower (even though it's a little noisy at night). There's alot of fluctuation in room sizes of the studios that I saw- you could luck out and get a huge one for just a bit more than an efficiency! All the current 1Ls I met were super nice and said they were really happy with their choice to go there, and not just the ones who were running tours that day and getting paid to say so. The proximity of the courts is just too convenient, especially if you're looking to get an externship at some point. It feels like a much smaller school than the numbers suggest, which is nice. The facilities that I saw were awesome (library, cafe, couple classrooms) and the tower, though kinda old and quaint, has a pretty decent gym and a ball court in the basement. And the financial aid office, though kind of a pain on the phone, is super helpful in person. So that's my 2.5 cents.

Oh also for those on the WL apparently you still have a decent shot at getting a spot in the tower if you get in and if you want it. I met a few people who did.

Other than the tower, where do most students end up living? Nearby neighborhoods close to BART stations?

BART is an easy commute from anywhere in the East Bay. I spend about $250 per month on BART fares, but the savings in rent more than makes up for it. BART also gives you time to read cases and supplements.

Went to the ASD on 4/17 and really enjoyed it! The administrators---admissions people were young, enthusiastic, and energetic. Had lunch with two faculty members who were a hoot! The admitted students seemed a little timid in interacting with other students and in asking questions. The end of the day in the lounge was a lot of fun. Looking forward to it! Anyone going to the discussion about the Supreme court case in the Alumni lounge tomorrow?

I'm trying to get started on the residency app. I don't need all 7 of these to qualify for CA residency, right? And I want to leave out the 2 months I lived out of country to study abroad. Would they notice if I just put in a CA address instead?

Forget the car registration info; they can't expect all students to have a car.
As for not being in the state, how much checking can they really do? It's our business where we've been as long as their other criteria are met.

ASD was cool, I'm glad that they were able to confirm the rumor about the smaller incoming class size (375-400).

My scouting trip into San Francisco went well. I spent the majority of my trip walking around the city, and hit most of the neighborhoods in the north east part of the city (Bewteen Divisadero and Market St). UC Hastings itself isn't in a ghetto like people made it seem. I walked around the area within a couple blocks of the school itself. There were quiet a few homeless folks, but that wasn't that bad, though it did make me uncomfortable at first to see people begging. During the day they can be annoying because they beg, but at night they keep mostly to themselves. The "sketchiest" thing that happened was probably being asked to buy shoes or walkie talkie, though I also saw a bag of weed chilling next to a trash can, and on other occasions random people rolling up jays right in front of the street (so all in all not law and order type material there as far as I could see). That was just three nights and I wasn't out in those areas past 10pm. Compared to the rest of SF though it may be a ghetto. Most of the city is just so unbelievably awesome that my home towns Richmond and Harrisonburg would be considered a ghetto in comparison as well. The only other time I ever thought that having a shit ton of money may be a worthy goal was when I was travelling around San Diego... but I think SF's more dense and diverse environment may give it the edge.

Also, I was pleasantly surprised by the lack of hipsters. Saw a couple people wearing skinny jeans with boots but all in all the vast majority of the people were very friendly and normal looking. It was pretty easy striking up conversations with people on the streets, from homeless people to yuppies.

Nice town... I think I'll enjoy it.

yeah but I think they still want us to pay rent in SF during the summer... paying SF rent + rent in another city we would be working in is pretty damn steep

to be honest I already knew a lot of the stuff they said about the school thanks to my neurotic internet info gathering but anywho, here's the non academic stuff I learned on my trip:

good:
confirmed info about smaller class sizes (5 sections around 75-80 per)

professors I met were funny and charismatic

students were pretty chilled out, I was expecting at least a few stuck up dbags, but I met none.

Homeless people aren't as bad as portrayed, some of the crazy ones have verbal outburts without talking to anyone in particular... that could be disconcerting or funny depending on your personality

food around Hastings is not expensive at all (I found that very surprising)

Exam taking software is not mac compatible

If you buy a laptop after 1st day of class you can increase your Fin Aid to meet that cost (in the form of the least favorable loan)

Bart is really comfortable and pretty fast (but I only rode it from Civic Center to SFO)

I'm surprised that the students were so shy. I'm a fairly introverted person and I had to start up most of the conversations. I guess that's natural at meet and greets

the safeway is not really withing walking distance of the campus

they put the major ASD events in one big dreary room... bleh

Anybody have info on the recent job placement? Salary info for last year's class for those graduating in the middle? The outlook for the coming years? Any and all info is appreciated, b/c I couldn't attend the ASD and ask these types of questions (I have visited Hastings, however) and I'm still debating where to go. I WAS 100% Hastings for years (and I've been admitted), but now I'm starting to lean Davis for a variety of reasons (and no, the new rankings have nothing to do with it).

Talked to a 3L on BART today...he said OCI was tough last year, a lot of people got summer offers but not many permanent offers. He estimated that about half of the 3Ls he knows have something permanent lined up as of today. Sounds like things haven't changed much from last year.

What are your reasons for favoring Davis? Location? I wouldn't put much stock in their employment statistics...there is something majorly fishy going on with those.

I'm also deciding between these two schools. Just wondering why you're favoring Davis now, if not for the recent rankings (which I'm not letting seriously affect my decision). I don't think job placement is substantially different between the two schools, if anything, Hastings should have an edge in SF.

Definitely an interesting area. Probably around 9pm I was walking up Market back to Hastings from Embarcadero (I think) through the sketchy couple blocks before the tower when this dude came up the the guy I was walking with and asked him if he needed women. When my friend said no the guy turned to me and asked me if I needed a job haha if it wasn't hilarious it'd be totally creepy.
