Same here (we have a deferred thread if you haven't seen it before). Not sure what the update means, maybe they've started reviewing our apps again early?onionz wrote:EA to RD-er here. Got an app status update today. No emails or anything though. hmm...

That's what the sticker-price plebs are for.LSATSCORES2012 wrote:I just think it's strange... I kind of think of scholarships as schools basically buying LSAT scores and GPA's, not as a temporary loan that's forgivable if you don't get a job. That having been said, since they explicitly state that the scholarship is given with this expectation, I don't think I could, in good conscious, accept the scholarship without intending to repay them eventually if I were able to do so. But I'm not willing to make such a commitment... I don't think. At least not right now.
Here I go over-thinking things again...
ETA: I suppose it does make sense though. After all, I would "only" be paying them about $5,000 a semester, and they need to fund that somehow.
I kid, I kid.

Me too! What's up with that line at the bottom of the letter? Is that just an early plea for alumni donations?LSATSCORES2012 wrote:Got an email saying that I wasn't awarded the Dean's scholarship, but they offered a $120,000 scholarship instead. Pretty exciting... and tempting.
ETA: They received my essay on January 7th.

Seriously that line would be a major turn off to me. It wasn't in my letter either, though. Seems really odd that they would put it in some but not in others.WhiteyCakes wrote:Me too! Part of me forgives the rudeness of the line because it is attached to a six-figure scholarship award, but still it is weird. Everyone pretty much agrees that it is a donation plea then?bernaldiaz wrote:Seriously that line would be a major turn off to me. It wasn't in my letter either, though. Yes, they had it in the letters last year. And Cornell's not the only school that does this......WhiteyCakes wrote:Part of me forgives the rudeness of the line because it is attached to a six-figure scholarship award, but still it is weird. Yeah but conceivably they would have three years to make that pitch to you. Why alienate you before you have committed?WhiteyCakes wrote: Part of me forgives the rudeness of the line because it is attached to a six-figure scholarship award, but still it is weird. I think I was reading that Georgetown does it as well. And, I have no idea why they would do it. As someone whose job description includes email marketing, the choice baffles me.bernaldiaz wrote:Yeah but conceivably they would have three years to make that pitch to you. I remember reading the same language in the Admitted Students Handbook also (under the general aid/scholarship section).bernaldiaz wrote:Yeah but conceivably they would have three years to make that pitch to you. Holy crap, they are replying to Dean's Scholarship apps already? I hope the fact that I have yet to submit hasn't doomed me.

I never got a Dean's Scholarship invitation, and I think I was somewhere around the first person admitted, meaning that they hadn't exactly run out by the time they got to me. This basically means Cornell isn't planning to offer me very much money, right? Theirs is among the least transparent of the scholarship programs at the top schools, so I honestly don't know whether my lack of DS invitation means I should give up hope or not.

Hey all,
Is it normal that my app is still incomplete after being received on 12/21?
Thanks!

You asked this before, did anyone respond? I'm guessing most of us have no idea. The only thing I can think of is maybe read through last year's thread around this time of year to see if anyone has the same problem as you and if there was any resolution?shntn wrote:I never got a Dean's Scholarship invitation, and I think I was somewhere around the first person admitted, meaning that they hadn't exactly run out by the time they got to me. I kind of get the sense that they are only offering Dean's Scholarships applications to people above both medians and not splitters. Cornell isn't known to be particularly splitter friendly in general, am I right? I'm sure they will offer you something decent. But to be honest your numbers kind of scream NYU so maybe they won't make much of an initial effort and you'll have to negotiate up and convince them you really want to attend? My gut tells me you could get that 120K scholarship but they might need some convincing.

Yeah, I can't find anything much on TLS, so I just keep asking in the hopes that someone else has some ideas. And that makes sense that they'd only offer the invitations to folks above both medians. I guess I was just hoping this cycle would be a little more forgiving of splitters than in years past, in terms of both admissions and scholarships. If it does come down to convincing them I'd take them over NYU, I'll just talk about how little I like NYC and how little interest I have in living there as a poor law student.BigZuck wrote:You asked this before, did anyone respond? I did not get the deans scholarship invite last year and still got a very generous scholarship offer. Unfortunately, you just have to wait until march or April to see what you got.
Eta: I was above both medians and didn't get the invite.

Also they said they don't negotiate it seems like they actually do.shntn wrote:Good to know. Thanks!ImNoScar wrote:I did not get the deans scholarship invite last year and still got a very generous scholarship offer. Unfortunately, you just have to wait until march or April to see what you got.
