Re: UVA c/o 2018 Applicants (2014-2015 Cycle)
Also, it should be said that a great many T14 students come from upper-middle class or higher backgrounds. If your parents are footing part of the bill, that's a game changer. Even just living expenses cancels out ~$60K in scholarships. Having no undergrad debt helps too.

Anyone have any speculation (or information) on how being an in-state student affects scholarships amounts? Is it safe to assume in-state students get offered less since their tuition is already slightly discounted?

Re: UVA c/o 2018 Applicants (2014-2015 Cycle)
No it is not safe to assume in-state students are getting offered less. In-state tuition is only $3K less than out-of-state tuition, when it's $51K vs $54K the $3K per year difference is negligible. I cannot imagine them factoring in the $3K difference for in-state tuition when deciding scholarship amounts. If they did, you would have a lot of weird dollar amount scholarships being given to in-state students (i.e., $111K instead of $120K or $81K instead of $90K). It would also just be strange to offer such a small tuition differential for in-state students only to have it held against them. I think it's safe to say that in-state students are not getting their scholarships reduced due to the relatively minor tuition benefit that they receive.commandercup wrote:Anyone have any speculation (or information) on how being an in-state student affects scholarships amounts? Based on Need Access one of the questions is about being a "long term resident of Virginia". So at least someone is getting a larger scholarship.Auxilio wrote:If anything I would expect in-state students to get a slight bump in scholarship offers

Re: UVA c/o 2018 Applicants (2014-2015 Cycle)
Also, like Lightworks pointed out, a lot of the students going to T14 schools (even law school in general) tend to be from upper-middle class or upper-class backgrounds. The prospect of paying sticker price at top law schools is not as intimidating if your parents have high income and helping support you through law school. Also, there are students who were veterans and receiving GI Bill tuition benefits and can afford to attend on sticker due to their benefits. The TLS conventional wisdom of not paying sticker price anywhere is most applicable to students from middle class and less than middle class backgrounds who know that their parents can't bail them out if they mess up taking out $300K of debt, don't have any GI Bill benefits, don't have any substantial savings, etc. In short, there are certain people who can comfortably pay sticker at top law schools due to various circumstances, but those people are not the typical TLS posters and hence the conventional TLS wisdom of don't pay sticker anywhere.TasmanianToucan wrote:TLS is a relatively small and self-selecting group that is just as prone to group-think as any community. I'm not saying the TLS consensus is wrong, but it is definitely on the conservative end of the advise spectrum. I work for attorneys who know I am leaving for law school and whom I have turned to for advice, and when I quote the TLS line to them I get strange looks. Partly I think that TLS people are risk averse, but I also believe that the new reality of a shrunken legal market and the availability of statistics has not fully penetrated the legal culture.Law1491 wrote:Hello everybody,
Isn't TLS wisdom: don't go to law school if you have to pay a sticker price for it, and 62% of the smartest people in the country are paying just that: sticker price for UVA. I am so confused about it...

I was thinking more along the lines of a potential bias where scholarships would be more freely offered to OOS students, but yeah what you're saying makes sense. Thanks!thatsnotmyname wrote:No it is not safe to assume in-state students are getting offered less. Accepted via Status Checker after interview this morning. Absolutely thrilled!!
I submitted 11/18, then sent a Why UVA on 2/19 and got an interview request a week later. If in doubt, write a Why UVA.

Very ready for an interview request or decision. Above both 75ths; submitted late December. Should I make the trip to visit?

That may be the case. Mine had my scholarship listed (although I had been notified back in the fall). Try to negotiate once you get the rest of your offers.Shelbinole wrote:just got the email that financial aid information is available.. it's all just loans though, no mention of a merit scholarship, does this mean i'm not getting one or...?

$0 here, but not surprised. I got about 3/4 of tuition at GW and more than 90% at William and Mary covered, think they'd budge on negotiations? I'm sure they don't consider them peer schools, but it can't hurt to try. Could really use a rich uncle right about now...
