This is not true. You have to be selected for faculty review to even go into faculty review--there's a blog post on this somewhere.Wormfather wrote:Everyone goes into faculty review, unless you're auto-admit, then Asha and another staff member looks at your app.rocktower3 wrote:

When you get rejected by Yale, you've been rejected by Asha (she didnt think you were auto) and three professors who collectively said you weren't a 12.

Yes, probably a WL, because after five months of waiting with but a tiny glimmer of home, what's another five months?az21833 wrote:still alive. I guess we are all going with WL = reject? i assume quite a number of us still alive will end up on WL.

"Over the top? Possibly. But these are the kind of subjective evaluations you are up against. Even in the screening stage, if I know that you don't stand a chance of being admitted by the faculty -- because, for example, in spite of your pretty good numbers you have offered little or no corroboration of your academic ability from professors who have taught you -- I may not send you on at all. It really depends on how good the rest of your application is (though to be honest, it's even more of a red flag if you have a straight-A average and couldn't manage to come up with two faculty references...it makes me wonder whether you are hiding something, like a serious personality defect or crippling social disorder)."

Re: Yale c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013 cycle)
Generally, the way it works is that I do the initial review of each application and at that point I have one of three options: (1) directly admit the person, (2) reject the person, or (3) to send the applicant file on for a faculty review. We have 60 permanent faculty members, and all of them participate in the faculty review process.
I admit roughly 50-80 students a year directly. So let’s say in the end we extend about 250 offers of admission -- I’m making the decision to admit anywhere between 20-30% of those students. The remaining 70-80% -- the bulk of the students admitted -- are admitted by the faculty. In terms of the percentage of the entire pool of applicants who are sent to the faculty, I would say it is about 20%, which means that we have a lot of applicants who are flat out rejected after my initial review.

Re: Yale c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013 cycle)
I believe Asha auto-rejects about 2/3 of the applicants. According to this article, of 3,400 applicants in 2008, 50-80 are auto-admits and 1,000 more go to faculty review; the rest are denied. Obviously applications have fallen, even at YLS, so presumably a higher percentage make it to faculty review now, but making it past Asha is a decent achievement.Wormfather wrote:Everyone goes into faculty review, unless you're auto-admit, then Asha and another staff member looks at your app.rocktower3 wrote:

Did you mention this in your app? CW is that graduate degrees (below PhD) don't help much and grades are inflated at all of them, but it certainly won't hurt.PutinSucks wrote:I have the following question: would the fact that I will be awarded a Master's degree from a Top 20 graduate school in my field in one month provide a boost to my chances of admission or not? As a related matter, my graduate GPA is 3.9.
P. S. I submitted my application on March 4th and survived this wave of rejections, at least as of this moment.

I think we all get confused by Yale's admission procedure at some point (well, except maybe the people smart enough to go). I was under the impression that two profs rate you out of six until a couple weeks ago (in fact, I think you're the one who corrected me).Wormfather wrote:Like my wife said to me this morning:

Like my wife said to me this morning:
None of us can go to more than one school the observer stated observantly. I think it is simple. Yale if you want to teach, hands down. Harvard or Stanford for anything else. One just has to admit that New Haven is a very bad place for a really great school.Mrs. Worm wrote:You're Hah-vahd smart, just not Yale smart.

Challenging coursework doesn't preclude grade inflation. My doctoral coursework was challenging, but those who failed got a B- in the failed course, not an F. (And, in my program, getting 3 B-'s meant that you'd get kicked out of the program).PutinSucks wrote:Yes, of course! My letters of recommendation were provided by my graduate school professors. And I have to respectfully disagree with you concerning grades. My graduate course of study was nothing short of brutal. In addition to full-time instruction, homework, and a Master's thesis, I also had to work 21-14 hours a week in "the field" with real clients and on real problems. It has been quite an undertaking.Yukos wrote:Did you mention this in your app? Re: Yale c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013 cycle)
I didn't say grades are inflated at YOUR school I said the conventional wisdom is grades in master's programs in general are inflated and it's extremely unlikely that the people on the admissions committee are familiar with the grading policy at your school (even if it's something famous like SIPA they probably only get apps from people with near 4.0s so there's no way for them to know that it's not inflated to hell).PutinSucks wrote:Yes, of course! Re: Yale c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013 cycle)
I'm bored at the airport so was reading the trend of last year's thread. It was like a few days into April and someone said the Facebook group was at just over 200 and then more people continued to get calls in the coming week. So unless they chaned who is invited to the FB group or reduced te number of people they plan to accept, te 160-something its at now is still freakishly low. I have no inferences of what that means, just saying.

I also kind of find it obnoxious that they have an admissions twitter, have used it in the past, are still using it for pointless tweets, an then not tweeting when they accept/reject people. It's kind of rude.

If everything else meets their standards, yes, it should boost your chances; I'd go as far as to guess that it would be your "something special" to put you over the top if the rest of your package is perfect. But it's definitely not sufficient to make up for deficiencies in other areas (if you have any), because they get plenty of PhDs from top graduate schools in every field conceivable...
