I am also posting this to the admitted thread:

I was admitted to UCLA in early January, and I didn't receive a scholarship. I got admitted to Texas recently and received an in-state tuition waver and $9500/yr. Since they are tied in the rankings, I wrote Dean Schwartz to see if UCLA could offer me a scholarship. Has anyone had any luck negotiating for scholarships so far?

I'm in the same boat. Admitted mid January with no word of scholarships over the phone, however, their acceptance email seemed to encourage negotiations. I got the same amount at Texas, 45k at Mich and hefty sums at WUSTL and UIUC I'm going to throw in to the negotiation ring.

I emailed Dean Schwartz over the weekend to see whether I am being considered for scholarships (and mentioned that I had others I was considering). He emailed me back saying that I should forward the other offers on to him and then he would forward those onto the scholarship committee.

Hoping I didn't jump the gun here, but I'd like to start negotiating somewhere. Under the right circum$tance$ UCLA could be pretty attractive

On an unrelated note (and I'm way to lazy to go through and catch up on all pages in this thread I've skipped, so I appologize if this has been discussed before), but...
During my acceptance phone call, despite not being offered scholarships and having no indication of financial need on my application, Dean Schwartz offered financial assistance for attending one of the admitted students receptions. I followed through on that, and they're offering to pay for the airfare. Sweet deal if you ask me, so if anyone else needs help/was offered help definitely send an email, they seemed really willing to help out there.

And CONGRATS to all the recent admits!

The grant email says, "We very much hope you find this offer competitive with others you have received. Please let us know." So it sounds to me like they're very open to negotiation. good luck!

They are definitely open to negotiation. On the phone, Schwartz basically said to me "Let us know about other school's offers that you are considering so we can match them."

This comes at the same thing as $96 million budget cuts to UCLA as a whole, not sure how it will affect the law school.

I believe the law school is a bit better insulated from the menace that is the UC administration, but that's just a guess.

The law school is basically the only part of the school that doesn't operate at a loss without government funds (like most law schools, they overcharge like crazy, even for in state).

This is partially correct. Engineering brings in crazy money in research grants, which UCLA administration takes something like 10-20% off the top for overhead on every single one. The real money vampires are the humanities, which are subsidized by the money that engineering and law bring in.

Most of the research grant money comes from either government sources like DARPA or from VC.

I left out engineering since its money doesn't come from tuition of students. But you are right, law basically funds the undergrad programs that future law students come out of.

Ok, so I submitted back in November with below median stats - but with very strong softs, NT/URM status, and a demonstrated interest in their CRS program. Since I hadn't received any word from them I submitted an LOCI two weeks ago that further addressed my interests in their CRS, and possible research projects I'd like to work on. The Dean and a prof from that program emailed me and asked me to read over some info and to schedule a time to call back next week and discuss my interests in depth. I don't want to get too excited about this - is it just protocol for them to follow up on applicant's research interests and questions regarding specific programs? Or, is this an interview, and therefore a sign that they are interested in me? I ask because I'm not a qualified applicant (in terms of numerical measures) and I don't want to start getting unrealistically hopeful. I know UCLA is one of the toughest programs to get into. Thoughts?

I would lean toward it being somewhat more of an interview. I do not think that is a standard procedure from what I have grasped via this thread. I would definitely be prepared to talk in depth about what you want to do/accomplish in the program and also be well-versed on the program and its history. UCLA is great because they are not simply about the numbers, so even though you might consider it a hindrance, UCLA may be more interested in everything else you have to offer. Sorry to ask a question that I'm sure has been asked before, but is UCLA's merit scholarship offer supposed to come with your initial acceptance packet? As in, if its not there, does that mean you are not going to be offered any merit scholarships?
