I am a URM and KJD, and my interview was way more focused on the KJD aspect of my application. I didn't feel like I got any "URM" questions.calpolisci2016 wrote:For URMs who got a JS1, did you feel like your interview questions were focused on those URM aspects of your personal statement/application?

I'm URM who interviewed on 12/5. And not at all. I was asked questions about my international experience and my academic interests in undergrad, but not once did anything feel like it had to do with being URM.calpolisci2016 wrote:For URMs who got a JS1, did you feel like your interview questions were focused on those URM aspects of your personal statement/application?

imo there is reason adcomm wouldn't try to focus on URM aspect. i think adcomm like to think of them as nice people and they want to avoid offending anyone inadvertently or issues that can stem from regulation or appearance of bias in admissions.azaleafire wrote:Nopecalpolisci2016 wrote:For URMs who got a JS1, did you feel like your interview questions were focused on those URM aspects of your personal statement/application?

I would imagine this is part of what they're thinking. Honestly I don't even see how bringing up URM status or topics in an interview would be helpful in the least.appind wrote:imo there is reason adcomm wouldn't try to focus on URM aspect. i think adcomm like to think of them as nice people and they want to avoid offending anyone inadvertently or issues that can stem from regulation or appearance of bias in admissions.azaleafire wrote:Nopecalpolisci2016 wrote:For URMs who got a JS1, did you feel like your interview questions were focused on those URM aspects of your personal statement/application?
I actually had a kind of weird experience with my Columbia interview that left me with a bad taste. My interviewer specifically pointed out that I "checked a lot of boxes" (for reference Im a gay urm from a pretty poor family). I know she probably didn't mean it in a bad way but it felt awfully dismissive and rude, as though my experiences were being seen as a number to them. So I can see why this is a topic that doesn't come up often.

Guys I have my JS1 this week, any words of advice before the big day?
I'm below all medians, but that's okay. I'm buying some crest white-strips!

I had a similar experience, Harvard's interview was great and didn't touch on my URM status at all. Columbia on the other hand only talked about my URM status and questioned me on its validity - left a bad taste that made me drop them a few rankings in terms of potential schools.xnsch wrote:I would imagine this is part of what they're thinking. Out of curiosity, does identifying as gay help/hurt your applications in any way you think? I'm gay, but I really think my personal sexual orientation has nothing to do with my profession, so I didn't disclose that info. I'm truly curious. Thanks. My Columbia interview also didn't really mention it at all. Maybe after my diversity statement they felt like they didn't really need to?Mackgal wrote:

Re: Harvard Law c/o 2020 Applicants (2016-2017)
I don't think there's any way it could hurt you and if there is any benefit I'm sure it'd be marginal. I addressed it in my diversity statement as part of a broader theme of using my personal experiences to help inform my career choice (wanting to work in public policy). So I explained how my being gay gave me the unique experience of seeing the effects of discrimination firsthandhellohalo wrote:Out of curiosity, does identifying as gay help/hurt your applications in any way you think? Edit: Well, not for me. but it worked for Pozzo. that's a 50% success rate on a JS1. I'll take those odds any day.
