Re: Duke Law c/o 2018 Applicants (2014-2015 cycle)
It seems like a lot of high scorers are getting lowballed on scholarship offers. Why is it?
- Is Duke doubling down on their 25-50 LSATs (giving more money than usual) to hold their medians?
- Is Duke actually considering need aid substantially? This could entail lowering awards for high scoring candidates with no need or lowering awards for high scoring candidates to give more awards to the class as a whole.

YP. They only want people who are actually going to comenickhalden wrote:It seems like a lot of high scorers are getting lowballed on scholarship offers. I'm guessing they have a pretty low yield rate among the above both 75th non-mordecai applicantsnickhalden wrote:It seems like a lot of high scorers are getting lowballed on scholarship offers. Offering 60-80k to the 3.6/170s probably yields more bang for their buck than offering 120k+ to the 3.9/173s
So I guess doubling down would be an accurate description. But I'm just spitballing here

yeah if you're above 75ths and didn't got a mordecai youre probably not going to get a good offer

But wouldn't offering lowball scholarships be the opposite of YP? You've accepted a Double 75th but give him a lowball offer that he could never rationally accept. It just seems irrational to lowball a Double 75th candidate. I haven't even participated in the scholarship process so I have no personal chit yet, but it just seems like an odd strategy.Mack.Hambleton wrote:YP. It's just that they can't lock up their limited scholarship $$$ promising huge offers to people who aren't very likely to attend. Maybe by slightly lowballing their above 75ths candidates, they allow for candidates to sort of demonstrate interest by negotiating. Presumably people with better or similar options elsewhere and little to no interest in Duke specifically are less likely to bother to negotiate Duke's offer but those who would seriously consider Duke with $$$ will try to bump their award higher.nickhalden wrote:But wouldn't offering lowball scholarships be the opposite of YP? Is Priority Reserve for a 177 clear YP? Was one of my top choices.

Yeah, you can't really say if it's YP or not without GPA. Also IIRC writing a LOCI on the reserve at Duke is useful, so if you really want to go there, stick with it; good luck!Winston1984 wrote:Also, we would need to know gpa.Mack.Hambleton wrote:Unless there's a problem with your app and/or you've been waitlisted other placesptz wrote:Is Priority Reserve for a 177 clear YP? I'm not withdrawing or anything, but I certainly feel forgotten.
RD, complete in mid Nov, under review early Dec, nothing since.
LSAT and GPA both between 25/50
Am I just fooling myself thinking I have a shot yet?

Similar situation here. RD, complete in early October and under review since 12/8.

During the scholarship interview, is it a good idea to tell them that I'm also admitted to Michigan with half tuition, and it'd be really great if Duke can be as generous since I would LOVE to be able to avoid the cold weather and attend Duke?

I think it might be a little forward to do that during your scholarship interview. Maybe save it until you see what your Duke award is and then try to haggle from there if it's not enough?janwlee wrote:During the scholarship interview, is it a good idea to tell them that I'm also admitted to Michigan with half tuition, and it'd be really great if Duke can be as generous since I would LOVE to be able to avoid the cold weather and attend Duke?
I'm no admissions officer, so that's just a reaction straight off the top of my head..
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
