So I'm a total newbie to California, i.e. LA- is it necessary/common for students to have a car on campus or what is the public transportation like there?

I have some friends in California and they've warned me that USC is in a bit of a dangerous area. I'd rather live in an apartment off campus to save money, but I don't know how I'm going to get back and forth from campus if I don't have a car (and I'd rather not walk around if it is a more dangerous area).

Having a car is convenient, but not necessary. Though the areas surrounding USC aren't too great, there are a lot of off-campus apartment options right next to the campus within walking distance. People complain about public transportation in LA, but it's not thaaat bad. Especially near USC/downtown, there are a lot of public transportation options.

This may be a dumb questions, but if you change to "committee 2nd read" does that mean your stats weren't good enough to be admitted for the first round of committee reads, but they don't want to deny you just yet? Or is it normal for everyone to have a 2nd round of committee reads?

From what I remember, it is not normal for everyone to have a second committee reading. A second read usually precedes good news. I think some people (above medians) are admitted after a first committee reading.

I guess they've been working through the new
Year because I was committee 1st read on dec 31 and now I'm committee 2nd read. Hope that's a good sign
(LSAT at median, GPa at 25)
