That's really awesome news!

But it's not so awesome that you didn't include a citation

Well if it's not public, then how can I (or we) believe you?

Plus, I was complaining that he didn't cite you, your original complaint.

You can't. But we each got our information from independent sources. If two sources are enough for MacKenzie McHale, they're good enough for me.

Thank you for standing up to my classmate's gross impropriety; my apologies for the jab.

So is MacKenzie McHale reporting this now? That would satisfy me, I think.

I wasn't intending to accuse your classmates of any gross impropriety. I assume they are gentlemen and ladies of the highest order

Am I disadvantaged further than OOS applicants as I'd be international? Will I have much opportunity for scholarships?

Finally, does anyone have any insight on the job market for someone in my position? I don't have any ties to Texas other than I love warm weather year round and the low cost of living. I have spent some time in Houston which I loved, and could absolutely see myself living there. I would be going with a BigLaw or bust mentality. If my chances at BigLaw aren't very good, I probably will not apply.
With zero ties I don't think your big law chances are very good. I would look elsewhere and focus on NYC big law if big law is the dream.
Yep if you can get into UT you can get in to Cornell or Mich pretty easily; those seem like much better options for someone like you
Thanks for the input. I was just entertaining the idea of Texas because of its low COL relative to NYC, and I very much do enjoy warm weather year round. Doesn't make any sense if I'm unlikely to be able to get a job though.

Just for argument's sake, would my BigLaw chances be significantly affected if I could place top 10% of the class? Or are the lack of ties to Texas really going to be a determining factor?
I have lived in Austin for five years, and I can tell you that the cost of living compared to the rest of Texas isn't low. My husband and I live in a 1 bedroom 800 sq ft apartment about 25 minutes from d/t w/o traffic (with traffic it's about an hour) and it's $1,075/mo. We're moving next week to a 2/1 about 1,000 sq ft condo close to everything but it's about $3,000/mo. Like any city you can always find cheap places, but Austin is far from a low cost of living. Austin has had a real estate crisis going on for several years now. It's very difficult to find something decent, close, and affordable. My sister-in-law is moving here at the end of the year and was floored to just how far her $1,000/mo budget doesn't go. If it's between Austin and Boston, L.A., or NYC, then yes Austin is cheaper. If it's between Austin and pretty much any other metro city I would give it some good thought.

^You're paying way too much for where you are living.

Also, to 0Ls I have good news. We had our CSO meeting and jobs for 1Ls were up from ~300 in summer 2013 to ~450 in summer 2014 (I know this is more than the number of students, it considers split summers).

Our rent at the new place is definitely high, and a 2/1 can be found for much lower. I was more pointing out that Austin is generally more expensive than Dallas or Houston. My SIL is coming from California and thought she could get a 1/1 or a 2/1 in a shiny new condo by Town Lake for $1,000/mo. Austin has gotten a lot more expensive just in the 5 years I've lived here. I don't think it's an impossible city, but as far as T14 goes there are probably more affordable places.

Yeah, you can find nice places for inexpensive but they're gonna be way up in Pf or RR or down in Kyle which sucks. Oh no way can she do that, my 1/1 that's near campus is almost that much. I'd agree with all that, I've lived here 5 years and rent has skyrocketed, at least for apts. House rent actually seems much more reasonable.

Agreed. Houses tend to be more bang for the buck. Pf, RR, and Kyle would be horrible with traffic everyday. We live near 2222/620. It's awful. I blame my husband! I always lived in 78704, but he liked it out here because there's "nature." I can't wait to get back to civilization and not spending two hours a day communiting.

For all the poors out there look into smart housing. It's an amazing affordable housing program implemented by the city of Austin. It really helped me out as an undergrad. Oh and guys UT is loaded, they know what students they need and they will make them offers they can't refuse, it just sucks that they get the scholarships when in most cases they are the ones with the less need.

BLAH BLAH BLAH Are you just a naive 0L who thinks UT loves throwing money around? I'm sorry, UT is actually fairly stingy IMO compared to schools around its ranking.

Have to go with Mojo here--UT made me an offer I couldn't refuse. I think UT does a good job with OOS (out-of-state) students. In this past cycle, they accepted the maximum of OOS students (35%) even though the requirement is simply acceptance of 65% residents. Almost every one of them (OOS) I've talked with has said they're getting in-state tuition at a minimum. If you're dead set on UT, look into an early decision. The incentives are pretty incredible.

I think they were pretty par for the course compared to Vandy/UCLA. I was content w/ my package or I wouldn't have come here, but I don't think they were generous.

Texas has a law or regulation that if an OOS gets any institutional scholarship they must be reclassified as an in-state student for tuition purposes (even if it's like 1K), so when you give the vast majority of people any kind of scholarship, nobody is really paying out of state. Because of this, I would highly recommend against doing ED if you're out of state; it's an incentive you're almost guaranteed to receive either way if you're admitted.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
