Re: Harvard Waitlist 2013
I'm going to throw out some numbers here. Please comment and let me know where my logic is off.RSterling wrote:So what are some guesses for the total amount of people on the WL? I imagine a significant amount of people who are applying to H are at least lurking on TLS and (hopefully) have added to the spreadsheet.
First, last year's waitlist spreadsheet has 71 TLSers on it. If you look at last year's thread on page 65 someone counted 47 admittances. LSN has 130 people on the waitlist of which 28 reported to be admitted. (As a comparison, 2011 has 136 waitlisted with 19 admits. 2010 has 161 waitlisted with 18 admits.) We don't what proportion of the total is on LSN. But according to Regulus' spreadsheet, it's anywhere from 15%-22%. Even if we assume that the waitlist proportion is 25% of the total waitlist, that still leaves us with a huge waitlist of over 500.
We could also look at the admitted numbers, decide to be very conservative, and postulate that the TLS count last year caught 30% of the students admitted off the waitlist. (We do know that people on LSN have a higher admittance rate than the general pool, last year close to 25%, but we don't know about that TLS count.) That would mean that they admitted about 150 students off the waitlist. This number sounds so ridiculous that it is difficult to believe. It means that out of a class of 557 students more than a quarter spent time on the waitlist. But a count of 47 on TLS is pretty epic too.
It's too early to look at this year's waitlist data, which is still coming out as we speak. But if you look at the HLS 2016 Facebook group, as I write this there are 486 members. For argument's sake, we'll assume that all members are admitted students, not admins or senior students, and that there are no students on it who deferred from last year. So they are all students admitted this cycle. Let's assume that if we add the students who didn't join the group we'll have 575. I may be mistaken, but I think that when students withdraw they are removed from the group. Some, but probably not many, admitted students have already withdrawn. And there will be more admittances before the waitlist is finalized. But we're pretty late in the cycle, so I don't think there will be that many more in April. Let's assume that if we add the folks who withdrew and the ones yet to be admitted, we get to 675 students before the waitlist action. That would leave us with about 150 spots left to be filled from the waitlist, with the projection that the final count will be somewhere between 825 and 850.
To get back to your question about how big the waitlist is. If it's true that they are going to pull 150 people from the waitlist, I would guess that 500 is a very conservative estimate of the waitlist size. Presumably they would want to keep even more people to make sure they can find 150 to attend.
N.B. Since I started writing this, WL folks started getting JS1s. It's a good indication that we really don't how this cycle will play out.

Just got the Js1 e-mail as well, haha. Talk about quick turnaround.
EDIT: I haven't used skype in years, time to update everything. I don't know why I didn't do this before.

Ok, so for anyone who know these types of things, do JS1 trickle out over the day or is it usually a one-time wave. Basically I'm asking if I really need to be constantly checking my e-mail today.eyfl wrote:@ 08 minutes this hour (whatever timezone you are in, for me it was 21:08)RSterling wrote:Wow, congrats! Re: Harvard Waitlist 2013
Just got the waitlist email. I was already signed up for the June LSAT, so there's more motivation. But looking at the time-graph, given that the june lsat scores won't come out til July, will it likely make any difference?

Congrats on JS1's everyone.
(Maybe too early to ask, but what are the demographics on this wave? URM and 169-172/high GPAs?)

Wow. Did NOT expect movement this quickly! Congrats everyone!
I can't tell if this is the oft-discussed "URM wave?" Seems like there's quite a bit of diversity! (ironic?)
