Re: USC c/o 2016 Applicants
Just received an email inviting me to apply for the "Rothman" scholarship. Anyone else?
They said they were inviting me to apply "based on my strong academic record", but even though they acknowledged their having reviewed my application, the email did not include a decision.

What was your October score? How's your GPA?M458 wrote:1239152 wrote:Rothman scholarship invite!!
I got this too...but I haven't even been accepted. My app is even still at Incomplete b/c they're waiting for my December LSAT score to come in.
Does this mean even with my October score they're inviting me to apply? I don't know whether to be excited or confused!!!

169 and 3.9x GPA. I mean, I know my #s make an acceptance likely, but I never want to assume anything! Just think it's weird to get this email when my app isn't even listed as complete on the status checker.WhatOurBodiesAreFor wrote:What was your October score? I think my December score will definitely be in the lower to mid-170s though.

So this scholarship invite is clearly a good thing, then.

Got the offer too. Left a message in order to inquire more. I'm surprised, I'm at a 168/3.72 and still have no decision from the school (stuck at complete since 11/12)... not sure if they're even offering me admittance! DEFINITELY would attend if this came through.

Could you let us know if you hear anything back? I'm also curious if this means we're admitted.

Will do. Hope to get a call back today, but we'll see. Stupid schools making me all excited and happy and a NERVOUS WRECK all at the same time. It's not fair, I tell you!!!

They have done this in the past. Check the old threads. It's no guarantee of acceptance.

Can you talk a bit about USC's competition with UCLA? I.e., are UCLA grads preferred all other things being equal?Dostoevsky wrote:Hello class of 2016. 2013 here. If you need anything or have questions that I can answer (not admissions questions), feel free to ask

I'm too lazy to dig it up. Last years thread they were talking about this happening and maybe mentioned that it happened the year before as well. It was in early December of last years thread. Or you can not believe me, doesn't matter to me.WhatOurBodiesAreFor wrote:Link usBigZuck wrote:They have done this in the past. Check the old threads. It's no guarantee of acceptance.
The sense I got was that invites to stuff like this don't guarantee admission. I'm sure it's a good sign though.

You know, not being an employer, it is difficult for me to comment on how we compare, without being snarky

I will say this, and it is completely unsolicited - USC has felt like home to me. They have kept their class size right around 200, which is big enough that it isn't a fishbowl, but small enough to get to know more than just your immediate circle. Everyone knows my name, most knew it when I arrived, and the Law School's employees are polite and treat us with respect.
In fact, there are several times that people have gone out of their way to accommodate me, and sometimes they have gone way out of their way.
I do not know about UCLA. I did know this about USC just by word of mouth.
That said, I know it is all about the bottom line these days. You have to take employment data with a grain of salt. Top students get top jobs, and don't borrow more than you are comfortable having to pay back without a dream salary.

If one applies to the Rothman scholarship and is chosen as a finalist to go out and interview at USC, is it in any way binding to go out there and interview? I assume if you are selected you can still choose to go somewhere else if other options are more appealing for some reason, but I just want to be sure.

I highly doubt an invitation to interview for a scholarship would be in any way binding. I didn't see anything in writing to this extent, but letting common sense dictate.zdamico wrote:If one applies to the Rothman scholarship and is chosen as a finalist to go out and interview at USC, is it in any way binding to go out there and interview? Rothman interviews aren't binding, but if you are selected you have a short turnaround time (like 24 hours.)

I got the email about the Rothman scholarship today too!
I was super excited until I realized only one person gets it...
I also frantically checked my status: "Committee 2nd read". Is that good? Is that bad? Did I make so many typos they need to read it twice?

I would think if you end up being fortunate enough to be a finalist for it and don't get it, you're still getting a very hefty scholarship from them (checking LSN I see a lot of $105k and $120k scholarships).zabava wrote:I got the email about the Rothman scholarship today too!

So I've been stuck at complete since 10/31 and now I just started lurking this thread today seeing that people who went complete after me have moved onto a status of committee review. Is that a bad sign?

I'm in the same boat (stuck at complete in late October). Not sure what to make of it.meggylou wrote:So I've been stuck at complete since 10/31 and now I just started lurking this thread today seeing that people who went complete after me have moved onto a status of committee review. Not late October, but complete with no movement since 11/13. I guess we probably shouldn't really start worrying unless we don't see movement by a month from now...orbbs wrote:I'm in the same boat (stuck at complete in late October).
