That's what I've been thinking. Reading LOCIs must just make them laugh. Everyone wants to go to Harvard! Hmmm you have me rethinking my rethinking hahasaito816 wrote:I actually never sent a LOCI in and got one of the JR1 emails today, I figured they know they're Harvard so they probably know exactly how bad I want to get in, without me telling them.Student13 wrote:Nightrunner wrote:In general, the answer is "sort of - not really." But individual schools do things by their own standards, and Harvard has its own Cuban-American student association (in the undergrad) and a Cuban-American UG admissions officer, so they might consider Cuban students as minority students (per their own standards). In your case, the answer is "maybe."Student13 wrote:I'm Cuban which is not a URM right? So does that mean there's still hope for me?!
I realize this isn't an exceptionally helpful post, but that's the best that I can offer you. It is probably the best that anyone who isn't affiliated with Harvard can offer you.
Thank you! It actually did help. This is what I figured. My LSAT score is so low that I kind of saw me being waitlisted as a joke and haven't really tried sending them extra information because of this. But now seeing that low URM scores are getting JR1s is making me regret my decision. Sending in my LOCI tomorrow!

Seriously y'all? Ignore them. This thread is not going to turn into a race-based debate.

Haha, probably not. In any case, just keep your fingers crossed while simultaneously trying to ignore any possibility of getting in...that's my survival strategy.georges2 wrote:Am I the only URM waitlisted with no JR1 email..?

Re: Harvard Waitlist 2011
URMs are exactly what their name says, under-represented. Not a minority period, a minority in the LS community. It's not some unilateral declaration of the downtrodden. Law schools are building a collection of individuals for their class, and they want a diverse selection in experience, culture, and life. That means including the uncommon ones as well as the accomplished ones. A collector doesn't pass up a rare piece just because its not in mint condition. There's nothing more to read into it than that. Adcomms are charged with building a diverse collection of students, and URM is simply part of the process. Thats it.r6_philly wrote: I know you guys are being funny but ... there isn't anything funny about being a URM.
Being an URM does not automatically mean you have suffered some extreme ill fortune and persecution. It doesn't mean your life has automatically been tougher than anyone else's. If you act ultra-PC and ridic sensitive about URM status and give the impression that this is the case though, it gives false gravity to this stereotypical idea of what URM means and it's not accurate. In the end this misguided protection does more harm than good, because it perpetuates the very misconceptions that incite the animosity we see towards the designation.
I'm sorry, but jokingly saying "why am I white" in context is not inappropriate any more so than someone being wryly jealous of any other softs that are out of one's control. It's superficial banter.

Just finished my JR1! It went well, I think. JR said they would be making JR2 calls early next week.

While this is true, the following claim is also true (which suggests that the above claim, when looked at in without considering the following claim, is a bit misleading):ElvisAaron wrote:Being an URM does not automatically mean you have suffered some extreme ill fortune and persecution. "Being an URM makes it significantly more likely that you have had to suffer through more ill fortune and persecution. It increases the chances that your life has been more difficult than others who do not share that status."
Other than that, I agree with much of what you have said (especially the bit about the motivation and rationale behind adcomm decisions).

You don't have to have "suffered some extreme ill fortune" to experience the effects of being an URM over not. You can be extremely fortunate in everything and still feel/experience it everyday.ElvisAaron wrote: Being an URM does not automatically mean you have suffered some extreme ill fortune and persecution. It is not the same. You can change/infuence your softs, you can't change your URM status. Other softs are not "out of one's control" as you put it - maybe damn near impossible, but still possible.I'm sorry, but jokingly saying "why am I white" in context is not inappropriate any more so than someone being wryly jealous of any other softs that are out of one's control. Re: Harvard Waitlist 2011
Whoa! I'm sorry, I didn't mean to anger anyone. I believe in affirmative action and everything, although it must suck even more to be a non URM minority - all of the racism/lack of opportunities/systematic economic inequality, none of the boost. I actually believe in affirmative action for economic status instead
But that's another story. Mod feel free to delete if you think this will be inflammatory
Congrats all jr1s!
(I do think comparing urms to objects, particularly not 'mint condition' items, is quite iffy)

I was surprised to hear the person above that just had his/her JR1 didn't have a JR1/JR2.
There's a dude named Josh Rubin who sends emails to one of the email lists I'm on... every time I get an email like that my heart skips a beat.

Re: Harvard Waitlist 2011
So I just had my JR1b...He just asked if I was still interested in attending Harvard and said that he would call me back on Monday or Tuesday when they start accepting people off the waitlist. No why law? or why harvard? It literally only lasted about a minute.
He didn't actually say that I was in...but kind of implied it by saying he'd call me back on Monday or Tuesday? Anyway, good luck to everyone else with an interview today!
