Anyway, sorry you got dinged.
Its all good. I actually wanted to believe it was a hoax of some sort.. keep my hopes alive. To my dismay I check the extended email address thread and saw it was in fact from UVA.

I'm fairly certain UVa doesn't want me in their class

But they clearly refuse to reject me!! At least for now

Wow, I can't believe GW lost Anne Richard (I'm on the wait list at GW). I met with and spoke to Anne on more than one occasion. She's the real deal and will do a great job at UVa. Kind of sucks for me though since practically all of my communication with GW has has been with her, but it is what it is. To those of you on the wait list at UVa, hang tight.

I sent an email inquiring about the money being offered off the waitlist to people with similar stats. I applied ED and it kind of pissed me off. I don't know how common it was to offer money off the WL. Anyway, as expected, I got a pretentious response about how the Internet is not a reliable source of information, but I figured there was nothing to lose by inquiring. Ed'ing with 3.92+ 165-169 seems like a mistake if people with those numbers got offered money. According to LSN a 3.93/165 was offered 75K. Now why some were offered money and others were not has no rhyme or reason to it from my research on here and LSN. It seems the 25th LSAT will definitely be down to 165 this year and they were scrambling to find applicants 25th+ LSAT 75th+ GPA. It's times like these that I hate the Internet and wish I was in peaceful oblivion.

I'm not sure I understand this. It pissed you off that they didn't give you $$ off the waitlist or ED, because others with similar stats got some? You sound kind of like a douche.

^Agreed. It stands to reason that UVA admits have to meet certain numerical criteria, but has it ever occured to you, cheese, that they may only dole out $ to people who have something more than just the requisite numbers?

Anyone know if they trim the waitlist before school starts? Or is it just that if you haven't heard from them by then that you pretty much have your decision...

Why does he sound like a douche?

UVa have encouraged ED applicants, and stated publicly on several occasions that ED applicants should expect similar scholarships as if they had applied RD. If that's not the case, doesn't an ED applicant deserve to feel a little bummed when they discover that a school they trusted enough to exclusively commit to misled them?

Tell me how common you think it is that somebody gets offered money with a 166/3.9. I'm going to go ahead and say it's not very likely. It's hard to tell through the poster's rambling style, but I'm pretty sure he/she is basing their entire complaint off of one data point on LSN.

I know plenty of people who ED'ed that got scholarship money. The poster's stats were way low, they did not get any. One person off LSN did.

The fact that the poster sent a whiny email to the admissions office, citing one LSN data point, strikes me as somewhat douchey.

I believe I have heard of one other reverse splitter being offered money off the waitlist. It may not be common and to me suggests UVa may be struggling to meet GPA targets this year.

Perhaps you got in with money. Perhaps you didn't and don't care. Kudos to you.

Personally, I think it's a commercial marketplace and they ask students to pay circa $150k over three years for tuition. If someone wants to ask for a discount they should be free to do so without stigma. Worse thing that can happen is the school says no.

I think we agree mostly.

I just think that the poster being "pissed off" and categorizing the school's response as "pretentious" comes of as somewhat entitled. UVA obviously needs one or two more high-GPA students to keep up its median -- offering scholarship money to a committed ED student isn't going to help that, and I'm not sure the poster has a legitimate gripe in being upset about that.

If the school continually offered RD students more money than ED students with the same numbers, sure. But the pool of students receiving scholarship money with 166ish LSATs (ED, WL, RD, whatever) has to be extremely small. I'd go as far as say that out of the pool of applications with a 162-167 (two thousand?), fewer than five non-URMs were offered money.

But I just pulled those numbers out of thin air, they might be way off.

Edit: LSN shows 3 WL, Accepted offered money with a 160-167 and 3.85+. Two withdrew. Zero non-URMs with those stats were accepted with money.

there are non-urms with those #s who got >60k this cycle. LSN is an extremely limited sample size.

well if OP had those #'s they prob would have gotten in just the same. these people didn't have great softs. it's about being in the right place at the right time, but everything is a bet. OP made the right bet - it just didn't work out for him. it's like putting rivera in the game, and he blows the save. doesn't mean mo was the wrong move.

I don't think I'm understanding. The poster about whom we're talking (I think?) DID have those numbers, something like 162-167/3.9+. Applying with those numbers to UVA regular decision is almost suicide. (Again, there are outliers). The poster significantly boosted his or her chances of admission by applying ED.

I agree with this. I know that LSN is not a representative sample, but assuming for argument's sake that it is representative, the chances of someone with a 165-169 and a 3.85+ getting money from UVA are less than 5%. There were approximately 70 non-URM's on LSN who applied to UVA with a 165-169 and a 3.85+, and I think 3 of them were offered $. 3/70 isn't looking good. The people with 165-169 and a 3.85+ who got in with $ were just very very very lucky, and $ is far from anything a semi-reverse splitter could bet on at UVA.

Thanks for having my back. I'm far from a douche and definitely didn't mean to sound like one. Let me put it more into context.

I had a 3.95/165. From past history it seemed like I was a shoo-in ED and a who knows? RD. UVA was one of my top choices, so I was happy to ED, get my cycle over and get a early start on my 1L year (it sure helped with housing).

Now never in a million years would I have expected similar numbers (3.93/165 in fact) would be offered scholarship money. In fact, if I was living in peaceful oblivion right now, I wouldn't have second thoughts about it.

However, I am one of those people who is always wondering whether I did the right thing. I was at peace with my ED and thrilled about attending UVA. But of course my curiosity had me checking out LSN and when I saw that I had the natural jealous reaction to someone who got something you didn't.

As Alb---- (whoever I quoted) said, UVA has said a number of times that ED should have no effect on scholarship offers. Of course I wasn't expecting a scholarship offer, but because of some freak circumstances, it seems like UVA offered scholarships to similar numbers in order to fill in the percentiles to their liking. It's natural to wonder if I would have received one of those offers had I done RD. Do I know for sure that I would have? Absolutely not. But the possibility makes me wonder at the least.

As for the "pretentious" part of the response, Mr. X from admissions basically implied that the Internet was lying and no such offers had been made. I mean, come on! It's 2011. This was based off at least 3 different individuals providing voluntary information. Word travels. He made it sound as if I was the one who was at fault for "believing" the Internet.

If he had answered like this, I would have accepted it and moved on:

Dear X,

Thank you for your inquiry. Unfortunately we do not discuss scholarship offers made to other individuals. There are a multitude of factors that go into our scholarship offers and we are unable to discuss why particular students received scholarship offers and others did not.

But the way I was replied to made me want to sign up on TLS just to prove the point that you cannot simply discount the Internet as it doesn't exist.

I hope that explains my thinking! Keep in mind, I was just ranting a little bit. I'm really a nice person and I look forward to meeting my fellow classmates this fall. To those not fortunate to receive a waitlist offer, best of luck wherever you decide to attend.

Thanks guys,

I feel you, but the point is that your conclusions seem to be based on scant information. I mean...there's little doubt in my mind that you haven't read the applications of many UVa applicants who were granted $$ right? For you to make generalizations about an admissions practice based on a few #s and Internet profiles seems a bit  right?

This is what I think a lot of people ITT are scoffing at because it makes you seem a bit entitled.

That said, I really do sympathize with you; sometimes, seemingly innocent questions are treated by admissions boards as ludicrous and are responded to with borderline-rude rhetoric.

Ranting is fine. I would argue that ranting about your lack of scholarship in a thread of people praying hard to get in off the WL is, at its core, a bad idea.

I completely sympathize with you, but I really think you made the right decision by deciding to ED. The $ offered to people with similar stats off the wait list was just what you said - freak circumstances. If this had been last year, these people wouldn't have even gotten in (since pretty much no one was admitted from the wait list last year). While in hindsight you may be wondering if you could have been one of those people offered $, getting $ was not something you could have reasonably predicted at the time you applied. And from the looks of LSN, the majority of people who were admitted off the wait list were not offered $. The few who received $ were just very very very lucky.

Anyone just get the email from Anne Richard? Looks like they will be cutting the waiting list significantly next week - she said they will likely not have much movement (if any) at this point.
