Are all scholarship offers alrerady out or is there more coming? I got the admission package today and there is no mention of scolly. I know some people got invited for interviews for scolarships. If you don't get invited for the interview does that mean no money?

Nope. There was a chat for those who got the scholarship interview letter and they said that they are the only merit-based scholarships they give.

I will more than likely have to withdraw then.
Not that I don't believe you guys, but I think I will email the admissions office to clarify this. I will report back.

I currently live in baltimore city and work in college park md (right outside DC)
I've gotten use to the ride but overall it is a pain in the ass. Be prepared to fill your gas tank once a week ($50)

95 traffic going to Baltimore in the morning actually isn't that bad when compared to doing the opposite and going from baltimore toward DC. I envy those who are on the otherside of the highway. In that regard it would be fine. Although it really depends where you are located in DC. If you live in north east near hyattsville/near college park/or even silver spring it will take you 45-60 min depending on traffic, living in Georgetown or downtown you would easily tack on an extra 30 min, especially if you have to take 295, I feel that would make the drive intolerable.

Another bonus however is UM's closeness to 95. it's only about 5 min tops from the highway.

I am actually considering doing the commute myself,
living in fed hill baltimore - work in college park - part time evening at UMD

Overall if its for the full time program and school is your only concern i think its fine if you don't mind spending time in your car.

If I go to UMD, I will be doing this. I had a phone call with an alumnae, who commuted 2 of her 3 years, 1 year by car, the other by the commuter train. She highly recommended train over driving because then you can use that time to read or sleep and avoid the stress of traffic. I think it's pretty common for people to commute, both ways, for many programs/jobs.

My mother lives in MD and I live in DC, so I take the MARC commuter train all of the time and it is EXCELLENT. The price is pretty reasonable (and I believe you can get a discount as a grad student, I know you can in undergrad) and the service is great. Its the best way to get from DC to Bmore and you will save a ton in both gas and time.

I emailed the admissions office yesterday asking about whether all the scholarship offers have already gone out. No response yet.
I will be withdrawing today. Good luck everyone.

I emailed them about the scholarship stuff over a month ago and never got a reply. I emailed about visiting and got a reply a couple days later. So I'm pretty sure that means there's only one scholarship.

Here's the response I got regarding merit based aid (note: they sent this to me AFTER I emailed to withdraw)-

The Admissions Committee typically selects scholarship candidates during the initial review process. However, the committee has not made all of its scholarship offers yet.

If you would like to submit a request for scholarship consideration, feel free to send a brief statement of interest to me. I will forward it to the Committee for their review. Please note that scholarships are not just based on academic performance but the committee will also consider leadership skills and accomplishments in your given profession, in your community and/or your achievements during your college years.

Acceptance letter in mail today -- 3.3/162. Nothing about a scholarship, or applying for one. Not my top choice but its my first acceptance, and its a pretty decent school, so it feels rather nice.

I think I read on their financial aid website that what you are designated as entering as a 1L will determine tuition for all 3 years so prob can't get in state.

So Maryland is stingy with money AND you cant re-classify as an in-state student? WHAT. Is any other out-of-stater majorly turned off by this???

not sure if this means anything... but i applied last year with a 3.38 (3.96 Major) and 160 as a UMD Undergrad and got rejected.

Does UMD send email notification that a decision has been made? I was under the impression that your status checker would change and then you get your decision via mail.

BTW, I am also a 2/8 "decision made"
