Ask nicely? The admissions people are pretty nice, and if you come for a visit and ask to meet with them, I'm sure they'll do their best to accomodate your request (although Kretzy was already admitted).

OK, thanks for the advice. I've hesitated to go on trips to schools before being accepted (afraid, perhaps, that it would be too forward of me), but as a near-median candidate, it might serve a dual purpose of getting a feel for the school while also making a small (perhaps too small to make a difference?) impression with the admissions folk. And if I don't get in, it would be nice to get away from the office for a day anyway.

I'm in-state and just applied a few days ago. I know my #'s are really low (3.3, 163, non-URM), but do you think if I ED I have more of a chance?

You'll have more of a chance, but it's still going to be a very low chance.

if you can, show some initiative by visiting. admissions are like dating. you have to show you're willing to commit if you want them to commit to you.

+1 to this. They LOVE visits. I even came during finals time, and Dean Faulk took me out to lunch and answered a good hour and a half of questions I had about UVA. I would email the office and try to arrange a time to head to Charlottesville (which is just a fun time anyway).

I showed up kinda unannounced in Trujillo's office over Christmas break and we ended up talking for almost an hour. They LOVE putting a face to a name.

A 172/3.9 updated about an hour ago, saying they also got the 90k scholarship, same as maggie. UVA, if you're reading this...if you give me that, I will withdraw all my apps within the week.

Same here. But if my status checker already changed to Admitted I am probably out of the running for that scholarship, I guess. Damn, if only my GPA were a little higher.

Said it in the other thread, and I'll say it here: I don't really like this at all. They're essentially trying to bait people into EDing because of their 15 day turnaround. You realize that UVA hasn't had a RD wave yet? They have the ED kids and then the 0-3/4 special (mostly scholarship) kids every day.

I think there's been more movement on RD than that. I got in 12/9 and certainly didn't get a scholarship.

As I said, mostly scholarship kids. I'm assuming you found out via an email telling you to call/a call? 0-4 of those seem to happen most days. A lot of the time it is scholarship kids, but often it isn't.

anyway, my sense is that when your status updates, it means that they've read your file and for whatever moved on to other files. i know they can come back to files several times before finally making a call, but this all conjecture on my part.

I had a 1/4 update too. I've been complete only since 12/15 and have had 3 different updates.

Not true, I know of multiple 3.85+/170+ who submitted when you did or before who are waiting for decisions, myself included.

Don't beat yourself up over the LSAT - 169 is a great score and you still have a decent chance at UVA if this ED thing doesn't make this cycle incomproable to previous ones.

its clear that uva guards its medians pretty jealously. i feel good about saying that breaking 170 would have changed things significantly. maybe saying that he or she would already be in was too strong, but that a 169 is indistinguishable from a 120 for rankings purposes matters.

Does anyone have an idea of how long they take to review files? It seems so random ~ I've been "Complete, Pending Review/Decision" since 11/17... so frustrating!

Just noticed my status checker updated to Pending Review/Decision 1/7. Don't know what date it was at before, but hoping this means decisions soon.

I'm still going with (hoping for, more accurately), my earlier assertion that my file date hasn't been updated except for the once on 11/04 because they reviewed it then and decided that I would be admitted, but are waiting for the first huge wave of RD to let me know. Right?

You could be right. Unfortunately, with the way things are going, the "first huge wave of RD" will be in late March. I mean, they've still got to wait for the all the new ED people to submit their apps in January and February, right?
