Candidates are right to be frustrated by yield protect. On the other hand, it is all in the game.
As Hyman Roth told Michael Corleone, "this is the business we have chosen."
I am actually a little more annoyed by the typos. If any of us wrote a communication as hastily written and fired off as UVa's, the ad com would have thought "not professional, not careful, not much effort put into application, why should I put any time in considering this application?"
It's one of those ways that the game just ain't fair. I think people understand that instinctively here, and that's why they're upset.

I mean, I'm just really happy that the e-mail wasn't a rejection.

Did they use first names for you? For me it went something like this (presuming my name was John Smith):tincan678 wrote:If that e-mail and the use of first names seems "unprofessional" enough that you feel personally offended by it, then you probably wouldn't fit in at UVA anyway. As for waiting, I'm at 130+ days for both NYU and Columbia, 100+ for Duke. Not sure why UVA is getting such disproportionate anger over this.
"Good Evening, Smith"
"I’d just like to beg your indulgence a little bit longer, Smith... "
It came off as really wierd actually, usually for an automated email they use first name, first and last, or last with a preceding title such as Mr, Mrs, or Ms.... never had an email with just the last name before..

Because some of us for whom UVA was our top choice going into the cycle are sitting here with six figure offers from CCN and had heard nothing for months until yesterday from UVA. Perhaps we are entitled, but mostly I just feel entitled to a decision and honesty about what UVA is doing in their admissions process.tincan678 wrote:If that e-mail and the use of first names seems "unprofessional" enough that you feel personally offended by it, then you probably wouldn't fit in at UVA anyway. But also I feel like the double standard is explained by the fact that UVA has to be much more selective in choosing students than applicants are in choosing schools. Basically UVA has to find reasons to ding hundreds of applicants, so seemingly minor errors become more significant. Conversely, applicants are (probably) only choosing between a handful of schools, so those minor errors become less significant.

Mine was first name.
Also as someone who has had catastrophic email typos at other schools and hasn't had it affect them adversely (I misspelled an adcom's name in an email and got in two days later), I'm pretty sure adcoms are cutting us way more slack than people ITT are cutting them. Calm down, guys, we're all human and prone to fucking up. It happens.

Re: UVA c/o 2018 Applicants (2014-2015 Cycle)
Mine was properly addressed to my first name, but I was, in fact, previously referring to the use of the admission people's first names throughout the email. However, I didn't say (or imply) that I was offended by it. I do stuff like mass emails for my day job, so if I had been editing it, I'd have recommended that they add some context, including last name and title in the signature, so that you wouldn't have people thinking it was an email from some random student. But like I said before, I thought it was a nice gesture overall, and I certainly don't "have a problem" with it.tincan678 wrote:I actually never received this e-mail. I figured they used only first names and people had a problem with UVA using the admissions peoples' first names. The way you worded it, I can see how it would be irritating.
If it's any consolation, another T-14 school accidentally mailed me some other guy's acceptance package. Luckily I was already admitted, or else it would have been AWKWARD.

Re: UVA c/o 2018 Applicants (2014-2015 Cycle)
Definitely a lot of overreaction in the previous few pages. Being a law school admissions dean in this climate must be a damn hard job. In some respects, being middle of the pack T14 like UVA must be even more stressful, as you're fighting to keep a prestigious spot with all eyes on you. Cordel's email was probably not the best PR practice, but his intentions were genuine and kind. The now-infamous typo is a wonderful reminder that even admissions offices are human!
This is my favorite post ITT by the way.Bird Lawyer wrote:Although I did think "Cordel" was a southern way of saying "Cordially." Like, as a valediction.

UVA's revised PR strategy should be to distract us from our way-overblown response to this email by sending some decisions.
In any case, I'll take a friendly, well-intentioned but unfortunate typo-containing email over NU's "the Committee does not want to deny you outright" hold letter.

(PS Didn't see this yesterday, but I read it at a red light and posted on here before pumping gas--although I did admittedly take up a gas pump for a minute longer than what is probably socially acceptable.)
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
