yes at one point it was really annoying. I was trying to listen to the lady who was locked up and that girl just sounded like ad-libs in a rap song lol.Rigo wrote:I was in the back cringing and trying not to laugh. Out of all of my ASWs, that was the singular worst moment of any of them. I completely regret following you guys into the clinic talkMr_Chukes wrote:yes at one point it was really annoying. Actually a few! Would you say you have a decent amount of free time? Where are good locations for people completely new to LA to live? Would you say students are overly competitive? I've heard that USC generally has a more communal vibe to it than most other law schools. Thanks in advanceambrajdurbra131313 wrote:Current 2L here- HMU if you guys have any questions: choosing USC, classes, grading, getting on journals, etc !

I loved the post conviction clinic talk but that was a fun cringeworthy cherry on top.

1) Yep, lots of free time. As a 1L, I only worked one weekend and never worked past 8, so plenty of time to go to all the football games, hang out with friends, and generally enjoy not having to read cases all day. Obviously, that varies by person, but I think everyone worked for a shorter amount of time as the semester progressed and the reading material became more familiar.dp3 wrote:Actually a few! 2) I lived in Terrace my first year, which was a good way to meet everyone, be able to walk to class, and is (in my opinion) a nice place to live. A lot of law students live downtown and in other buildings near campus. Of course, theres a subset that live on the West-Side (mostly 2Ls and 3Ls) and in neighboring areas like Culver City and Korea Town. I would just recommend not being cheap about your 1L apartment- I was this year and really regret it haha.
3) USC definitely is not competitive at all. There are, of course, some kids who are, and some people can get pretty intense when legal writing assignments are due, but, even then, all of my friends were pretty relaxed. The administration really goes out of their way to emphasize that USC is, and should be, noncompetitive and that we're all on the same proverbial team- having a small class size helps in for this as well. Blind-grading is awesome too cuz even if someone really goes all out for each class with regard to volunteering, it will only help their grades are the margins (and even then only for some profs).

Can you explain the law school grading curve? Is it really as hard as everyone says?ambrajdurbra131313 wrote:Current 2L here- HMU if you guys have any questions: choosing USC, classes, grading, getting on journals, etc !

Re: USC c/o 2020 Applicants Thread (2016-2017)
For 1L, my understanding of it is that there is a strict 3.3 (that a low B+) curve- there is room for a small amount of deviation here (like .15-something). The practical consequences vary by class- in some classes the highest grade will be a 4.2 and in others a 3.9; it basically comes down to how close students were together/how close those at the bottom of the curve were to those in the middle of the curve/how much a prof wants to make sure that no one has a super low grade. The distributions are class/prof specific so you kinda just have to hope that the profs in your section give out generally high grades. Legal writing is different in that the curve exists, but the top is always like 4.0/3.9 and the low grades are never too low.lawpotato wrote:Can you explain the law school grading curve? Re: USC c/o 2020 Applicants Thread (2016-2017)
Just dinged via email. Was my top choice. 167, superior LSAC evaluation, engineer, mba and six years work experience. Am sure the timing has something to do with my email earlier in the day checking (politely of course) if there is something wrong with my app. But well, too many deposit deadlines.
Dinged at Cal, WLed at UCLA and dinged at USC. Shocking Cali cycle. Hope you guys have a great time at USC!

So...out of sheer empathy for the new USC 1L crop...Textbook costs are outrageous. I'm willing to sell far below buying price. You'd be buying the right book, at a far cheaper price than online and the bookstore. So who needs books?
