Re: Columbia c/o 2018 Applicants (2014-2015 cycle)
To anyone planning to write a LOCI, here's a sample from the "Held at Columbia 2011" thread:
Dear Columbia Law School:
I wish to inform you that, after careful consideration, your school has been placed in my "Hold" category, which means that you are still under active consideration for where I might attend.
To proved a context for your present status, I have applied to a dozen schools, been accepted at nine, and received merit based scholarships at three. This year I will only be selecting one school to attend, and this year's pool of schools is among the largest and most qualified in my history. Therefore, your current standing represents a testament to Columbia Law School's unique strengths and fit.
While I cannot speculate on my final decision, I want you to know that you are among a select group of schools that I continue to consider - and will continue to consider throughout the rest of this application season. While I know that a last minute decision on my behalf might not be convenient for you, I will let you know by sometime in May.
In the interim, should you wish to admit me by March 31st, I will gladly consider that supplemental material in my decision. If during this time you decide that you no longer wish to be considered for my attendance, kindly notify me by contacting me at XXXXXXX@gmail.com.
Thank you again for your patience. I look forward to being in touch as soon as I receive a decision.
Sincerely,
TheLastStraw05

Also held but to be honest pretty happy it's not a WL/ding
Have dings gone out? If not, don't think I'll feel as optimistic...

Held as well. LSAT < 25% GPA > 75%
Also curious about this.wheresthethesis wrote:Also placed on hold.
Is it safe to assume that this eliminates any chance at receiving a substantial merit scholarship from them?
Edit: And hey at least they just ask for a LOCI, not those awful questions that NW asked.

Mostly really happy that I was held and not auto-dinged; Columbia is definitely my dream/a super reach. Settling in to start drafting my loci.

How bad is a hold? Do a lot of held students end up getting in?

Re: Columbia c/o 2018 Applicants (2014-2015 cycle)
Hard to know as this cycle seems pretty unique. Columbia is doing some extreme yield protection here, and I figure a lot rides on the level of interest/likelihood of matriculation if admitted expressed in the LOCI. If you've got HYS numbers, better make those LOCIs convincing, folks.BearsintheRafters wrote:Held today. Does anyone know how many people are held in any given cycle? Also,

I'm just hoping we don't get caught between the two: not good enough for HYS, but too big of a yield concern at Columbia.

I figured they had decided to go from a hold to a ding in my case. Still cruel, I guess.nickhalden wrote:The amended email is almost cruel. My first thought was that they had accidentally sent the hold email to me and wanted to, as recompense, admit me immediately.

Yeah? Did you get dinged at HYS and held at C? Or are you still waiting with us JS1s at H?LawBron James wrote:Apparently this is me.whosinthehousejc wrote:Hard to know as this cycle seems pretty unique. ETA: Guess that's what the LOCI is for. I'll probably wait 'til after the next JS2 wave to submit.

Still waiting with a fairly early JS1. Obviously I'm not totally out of contention there, but I'm right in that window for now.whosinthehousejc wrote: Yeah? Did you get dinged at HYS and held at C? Or are you still waiting with us JS1s at H?

Also seconding Mack's statement about Chicago. I have that making me feel pretty good regardless.
