I didn't submit until Nov 17th, so I'd have to wait until March 12th to have the same waiting experience.

Suggestion for new poll: Have you been waiting longer than Dean Cordel?
November 26, 1997 to March 21, 1998 is 115 days. At this point, I've been waiting for 119 days.

Re: UVA c/o 2018 Applicants (2014-2015 Cycle)
Eh, sure. . .
Good evening, [My Name],
I know at times this process isn’t always easy – and right now, likely, is especially not fun. You probably want to hear something from the UVA Law Admissions Committee, and you probably want to know why you haven’t heard from us, yet.
Believe me, I can sympathize with you – and I’d like to ask you to bear with us for a little bit longer.
In 1997, I exuberantly submitted my applications to law schools in November. I popped them in the mail the day right before Thanksgiving. I was a splitter (and a first generation law school applicant), so I had no idea what to expect from the admissions process. Next came weeks of EXCRUIATING waiting. I remember sitting on a Blacksburg Transit bus during March of my senior year, and a friend asked me what I was doing the next year. I told her I really wanted to go to UVA Law School, but after months of waiting I figured my chances basically were nil.
The waiting was torture, until I finally received a letter on March 21, 1998 – almost four months later. My roommate saw me fall down and cry that day.
I understand how bad the waiting can be. I remember it vividly. Josh, Grace and I really, really do get it – and we hate any angst you are feeling because of the wait.
I’d just like to beg your indulgence a little bit longer, [My Name]. We are making our way through the pile of applications, and we are trying very hard to make sure we don’t keep you waiting too long – mainly because we remember what that feels like.
This is one of the byproducts of the holistic review process we cherish.
Please be in touch if you need anything. Otherwise, we’ll get you an answer as soon as we possibly can.
Thanks for the patience.

Re: UVA c/o 2018 Applicants (2014-2015 Cycle)
I also overlooked the typo until I was on here (I think it's easier to do when in all caps, since that's not how most of us are accustomed to reading) but the first-name usage stood out to me as a little strangely informal. I assumed it was from the dean based on the context, but as I was reading the email, I was definitely wondering who Josh and Grace are. I can put the pieces together and guess that they're members of the admissions office, but I was surprised that there was an assumption the average applicant would know them on a first-name basis. In any case, I agree it was a nice gesture.mwonka wrote:Eh, sure. . .

This could easily be a bit of an entitled way of reading the email, but I think that is how a lot of us are receiving it - hence the bitterness. I would love to go UVA (if it was financially viable), it is one of my first choices, but it is quickly making me annoyed/not in my thoughts when considering where I will be headed.
My comment had nothing to do with my position as a surefire YP'er, nor was it about the typo. The writing is just so utterly shit it's clear he banged it out in one go before sending it to hundreds/thousands of applicants who've put a ton of work into this thing.

I saw the news announcement on their website about Josh and Grace joining the admissions team. From this email, though, it sounds like they are the admissions team. I don't know what's typical, but that seems like a pretty small force to pore through however many thousands of applications.nosocat wrote:I assumed it was from the dean based on the context, but as I was reading the email, I was definitely wondering who Josh and Grace are.

Re: UVA c/o 2018 Applicants (2014-2015 Cycle)
I honestly don't see what the big deal is. Seriously? You're getting offended because the DEAN of one of the best law schools in existence sent an email begging us to just be patient for a little longer and even threw in a personal story about his own application experience?
Most schools don't even care that they keep their applicants waiting for months at a time and even if it was an informal email he at least tried to sympathize with our current situation. Even if your applications are better than the average applicant to UVA you don't need to get all cocky and hurt over a bundle of words. If you're going to be a good lawyer you need to not take things so personally and try to find the good in what you're given. To me, that email displayed the human side to the admissions committee which is the message I think the Dean was trying to convey and the fact that he even felt the urge to respond to those who haven't been admitted/rejected yet was a kind gesture.
In short my message is this: grow up. Save your hurt feelings for rejection letters and if you think you're too good for any kind of rejection in general then you probably need to re-evaluate your life. A person who complains like that is, in my opinion, the most unprofessional kind of person out there.

Got me. Didn't realize I was logged into my old account at work. If dean Faulk can have 6 emails at UVA, I can have two TLS accounts. I also think I'm totes justified in holding myself to a lower standard.Hikkomorist wrote:Ehrler wrote:Your comment?Dipper wrote:Seriously? Come on. just added my dates up, I'm at 125.
ETA: I expected a long wait from the beginning, so I'm not upset. I don't get why anyone would get so worked up over communication from the Dean of Admissions when he didn't have to send the email out in the first place.

Let's move on, shall we? Consensus is that the email was thoughtful, even if rushed/reactionary, and that we appreciated it. A couple dissenters here and there, but aren't there always.
Next topic of discussion: Will all the scholarship money have been awarded by the end of March when the brunt of us still remaining receive our decisions, or will there still be some $ in the war chest? Dear all Dillard recipients: Have you tasted the New Haven pizza? I hear it is absolutely amazing...

Re: UVA c/o 2018 Applicants (2014-2015 Cycle)
I think you are misinterpreting what I was saying. I do not really care that much about the decision, it is the method they use to get there. And I have gotten rejections and am fine with them. I am more than willing to be rejected for a wide variety of reasons, but I think it is understandable why I am upset when one of, if not the, top choices for me is not willing to give me a decision because they are afraid I will not come. Then posting in an unprofessionally-written (and its not really the typos, it is multiple aspects) email that I should "bear with them" because it takes longer for the "holistic review process [they] cherish" when we can be reasonably certain that at least for many of us (maybe not me, I might actually be rejected on my merits) that holistic review process is (LSAT + GPA)/likelihood of matriculating.bodie9 wrote:I honestly don't see what the big deal is. Sure it is entitlement to think that I should be accepted by a top law school, but it is not irrational when we know the vast majority of the decision is based on numbers, and many of us are well above their medians/have been accepted at higher ranked schools. Look at a MyLSN graph of upper numbers and it is hard to deny that UVA is worse than their peers when it comes to YP.

yield protecting. Percentage of folks that actually attend after being accepted factors in the US News rankings. So some schools may WL or even deny applicants they don't think would actually attend.gotsnork2 wrote:What do you guys mean by "YP"?

Yield protect. It roughly means that UVA wants to admit applicants that they actually think will attend, because their yield rate is factored into rankings. For example, they might wait list a 175/4.0 because that person might go to HYS instead of Virginia.gotsnork2 wrote:What do you guys mean by "YP"?
