Does getting that email mean I've been accepted?
I haven't received an actual acceptance letter/email...
Afraid you're gonna have to wait a little more, sorry!
Would love some decent travel stipends from 3-4 schools for March or April - I live on the other side of the Pacific and am willing to pay a visit to the states, but would appreciate money to coordinate visits to some top choices (assuming I get in). WashU gave me a full scholy so it's definitely
super high on my list and I'd love to visit!!

most likely attending in the fall. i hope to move to dc upon graduation. wondering what current students think of this- is it relatively easy to get a job in DC as a WUSTL grad? thanks.

Still at Application Documents Received since 10/23. Borderline numbers, but not so borderline to the point of not hearing anything for 3 months.
I called the admissions office a few weeks ago and spoke to Naomi who told me that my application was sent to the committee for review a while back.
Anything I can do to maybe get the ball rolling?

Probably the toughest legal market to crack in the nation. You would need top 10% grades to have a decent shot I think. There are just so many people from so many great schools trying to get there. I mean, we do place people there every year, but it's not something you can come here counting on. If you are dead set on being there after school, there are better options than WUSTL.

DC is tough. Do not go to WUSTL with aspirations of working in DC. Even at top 10%, it's far from guaranteed. DC is the single most competitive market in the country: it has 2 huge schools (GULC and GWU) plus Penn and UVa are only a few hours away, and every other T14 has students who want to be there. This isn't really a knock on WUSTL's placement relative to its peers. GWU doesn't fare much better in the market (and has substantially higher COA with less generous scholarship aid), and GULC at sticker would be a huge risk.

NYC biglaw is highly grade competitive from WUSTL. Pretty much need top 10-15%. As for home markets: that depends on the market.

That's pretty much all WUSTL does well. Home markets* and
some NYC placement.
*DC, Chicago, SF, etc. do not fall under the home market idea. Difficulty of the market trumps. Go to a T14 in those areas if you want to work there.
(edit: scooped)

I feel like Wash U also doe pretty well in most of the midwest, excluding chicago and maybe areas near comparable or better law schools (minneapolis, detroit, etc.)

1) the people are usually Midwest or even more specific natives, not randos. Covered by the home market idea above.
2) "Midwest minus Chicago, Twin Cities, Detroit, etc." is not a very large remainder of legal markets

Some dude from the east coast is going to have a tough time explaining why he wants to live in Indianapolis or Kansas City.

So is WUSTL biglaw placement basically NYC or bust for someone who only has ties to a saturated, desirable west coast market?

It depends on who you are (diversity, IP, ties, etc.). The better your grades, the more markets will open, but no I wouldn't necessarily say that NYC is the only viable option. California is possible with grades and ties; St. Louis (although quite difficult for out-of-towners) is still possible; Chicago (although an all-around difficult market) is possible; and I do know a few people who ended up at big firms in DC. NYC is just the best/safest bet if you have the grades. That's true at pretty much any school with halfway decent biglaw placement, though.

Oh gotcha. No one really ever used ours last year. All the conversation just stayed in the waiting thread for some reason.

!!! Just got an email stating I've received a Scholar in Law Award - $42K/yr. I'm on the PI track, so being as close to debt-free as possible is a huge priority for me. Wahoo!
