I just got a call from the Dean asking about the deposits I have placed in other schools. She asked me if I was still going to Miami. This must mean they are looking at WL applicants and the list will start moving soon. Good luck to all waiting!

Hola! I also just finished my 1L year at UM. I did very well my first semester, though I'm sure the previous person taking questions also did too. I would also be willing to answer questions about studying, supplements, Dean's Fellows, and the dreaded Elements class if anybody has those in addition to questions about UM life in general.

Helloooo. Sorry I've been missing, took a little vacation to celebrate the end of 1L year.

I personally did not think the social atmosphere was cut-throat. Yes, there were some people that took themselves absolutely too seriously, and fancied themselves law school heroes, but mainly most people ignored them, and were able to pick them out and avoid them. There are going to be gunners in every section, but it's not the majority by any means. I met a lot of wonderful friends who helped get me through the year.

Living situations are another question. As far as roommates, I don't have one, but I know a lot of people that do. I'd suggest a roommate outside of your section if you can find one, the school should be able to help you with that.

As far as the area, a lot of people live in Brickell. It's a bit young professional, not quite the college party atmosphere. The Grove is more of an undergrad hangout, but some people still go out there in law school. Both are great areas. Brickell is a little bit pricey, but it depends on your budget, and if you can find a roommate. There are also some apartment options closer to campus, but not in walking distance of bars or food. I know some people that live near Miracle Mile, too, in Coral Gables. There are nice apartments there. But yes, the Grove is fun, things to do and places to walk to. It just might be filled with a bit more undergrads than a place like Brickell, but it comes without the Brickell prices.

If law school is anything like undergrad, there are no tickets. You just swipe in with your Cane Card and sit in the student section (behind one of the endzones). You can sit with any students you want. Hatteras, if it's different, please correct me.

Congrats! Does anyone know anything about Red Road Commons? Good place to live?

One of my friends (who is an undergrad) lives there and loves it, but beyond that I don't know much. It is within walking distance of the law school, though. By the way, the law school parking lot is AWFUL. It's extremely cramped and I've heard that a lot of people get their cars dinged parking there.


I'm thinking about living at University Inn. Anybody else?

I live in RRC right now. It's not bad. Definitely good if you don't want to live far from campus. It's a short walk to a shuttle stop, which takes you right to the law school. A little expensive for me though, so I'm moving out before school starts.

As for the parking, I got an email from them today. Not sure if they sent it out to new law students.. but it talks about a new system they're trying to ease the situation:

To make it easier for motorists to find spaces and to reduce traffic around campus, a new parking management program will be implemented in August 2011 on the Coral Gables campus. The new program will divide parking into six separate zones, and the sale of permits for each zone will be matched to the capacity for that zone. In other words, there will be a limited number of permits sold in each zone. The same total number of permits will be issued.

The new program has the following goals:

more evenly distribute parking across campus and increase usage of underutilized spaces;
significantly reduce parking “orbits” and traffic on neighboring roadways;
give permit holders increased probability of finding parking where their permit is valid; and
provide more flexibility in managing parking inventory as demand and University needs change.
This new system will work as follows: Faculty, staff, and students will be able to apply online or in person to select a permit within their preferred zone based on availability. Once a zone is sold out, it will no longer be available for purchase. In this case, applicants can then select from the remaining options and, if desired, go on a waiting list for their preferred zone.

“We are aware of the issues encountered by the University community with regard to parking on our campus. We anticipate that this plan will provide a more balanced approach to utilizing our capacity,” said Richard Sobaram, director of Parking and Transportation Services. “Over the last few years, the University has implemented several strategies to address parking and traffic congestion on the Coral Gables campus and surrounding roadways. These include restrictions on first-year residents and University Village residents. This new program is another step in our long-term goal of reducing parking congestion and improving traffic circulation.”

The application process will start in July, and permits will be sold to specific groups based on an established distribution hierarchy on a first-come, first-served basis within these groups. The distribution hierarchy is listed below with specific dates for selection to be communicated at a later date. Please note that Fall 2011 prices will not be affected by this change, and faculty and staff may retain the same permit type in subsequent years if they choose to do so.

Early July 2011: All faculty and staff
Mid-July 2011: All returning students
Late July 2011: New students, including transfers, new law and new graduate students. This does NOT include first-year students who are residing on campus.

The one thing thing that turned me off to Red Road is that it is pretty much filled to the brim with undergrads and has been described to me as a quasi-frat house. Living in a place that was quite and was not filled with undergrads was important to me so I crossed Red Road off my list. Take this FWIW.
