Well, kids, I'm off to western North Carolina for the summer to work at summer camp for the last time, and I won't be on TLS much this summer, if at all.
If you're going to IU, I'll see you in August! Peace!

Re: In at IU-Bloomington!!!!
Apparently my application wasn't lost in some filing cabinet. I just got the following email this afternoon:
Anyone else get something like this?
I suppose my application must have been at the very bottom of a very big pile.Dear XXXXX
Your patience in our admissions process is appreciated. Your application is currently in the review process.
Because of deadlines at other schools, many applicants have already made plans for the upcoming year. I am writing to inquire if you are still interested in our program. I must add however that at this point in the process we have overextended our scholarship budget and do not anticipate making additional scholarship offers.
If you are still interested the Committee should be able to make a decision within the next 10 days.
Again, thank you for your patience and I look forward to hearing from you.

Re: In at IU-Bloomington!!!!
I visited IU Law on Tuesday. I'm in the middle of making some very big decisions. But I'd be glad to share my experience with anyone with questions.
Overall, I was impressed with how nice everyone was. I locked my keys in my car (first, and I hope last, time!) and the former dean of admissions, who is helping out "contractually" (I assume because of the massive backup), could not have been nicer.
One thing that seemed a little worrisome was that a lot of my questions were answered vaguely, especially re: job placement, etc. A bit of honesty that slipped through that was depressing was that someone in the admissions department stated that firms will never go back to hiring as many students and recent graduates as they use to. Add in the fact that there are more applications for law school and (at least some) more applicants than ever before, and says to me the job market will never be that great again. Oy gevalt.
Well, Bloomington was a pretty nice place. Blazing hot and humid, that day! But nothing I'm not used to be from a few hundred miles south. Seemed like plenty of things to do for a town its size, though everyone cautioned me that what I saw was rather different from what it will be like come August (that is, it will be very crowded then!). Nothing I wouldn't expect. The school I have been at is half the size, but the city is about 12 times bigger than Bloomington, so there are some real contrasts to me.
Anyway, if anyone wants to pick my brain, I'll do my best to answer.

Also, I applied in late February and have heard not a peep from these guys. Is this normal?
edit: IU-B is a bit of a reach for me, but still within the realm of possibility.

Re: In at IU-Bloomington!!!!
Nearly every rising 2L has a law related job this summer. Many are quite impressive, though most are unpaid. I know people working at big firms, in-house, federal and state court internships, firms abroad, etc. I was very impressed with the job situation for my class this summer, especially considering the economy.jmhallah wrote:How many people do you know have law related jobs this summer? A note about the big firm jobs: Most are unpaid summer associateships (and all are in Indianapolis). I know about 5 people doing unpaid SA's, and 2 that have paid SA gigs in Indianapolis. The 2 paid were the result of family connections, and had little to do with grades or merit.
By far the biggest role in finding a great 1L job is networking and effort. I know people in the top 10% of the class who have no jobs or something quite average (research assistant, circuit court intern). I know people in the bottom half of the class who have very prestigious internships because they worked hard to get them. In terms of 1L jobs, effort is more important than grades. This is not the case for 2L OCI, however.

Yeah, it's normal. For better or worse, the admissions office tends to be quiet. You can call them and ask for a status update. That's what I did, and they didn't mind.Ty Webb wrote:jmhallah wrote:How many people do you know have law related jobs this summer? I was a waitlistee actually. I got off the waitlist in mid-June. My numbers were fine, but I also applied in late Feb.

Ty, I applied in late Feb, hadn't heard anything and got a rejection in the mail today. Also a reach for me (splitter + late = doom).Ty Webb wrote:jmhallah wrote:How many people do you know have law related jobs this summer? Re: In at IU-Bloomington!!!!
I applied late in February last year, and they were really pretty quick to get back to me. Of course, they seem unprepared for the big increase of applicants, so who knows. I think it's hard to give you a rule of thumb when this year is not like previous ones.Ty Webb wrote:

I do know some that got in to IU in June or July, so all hope is not lost.

I also have not heard anything and I applied in March. Haven't heard a word since I applied. I only applied because they sent me a fee waiver but I am definitely not up to par. Still weirds me out that I haven't heard a word. I am hearing many good things about the school and would definitely consider going.

Re: In at IU-Bloomington!!!!
I got an e-mail today stating that the admissions committee was reviewing wait list applications. The e-mail looks like the same as the e-mail sent out to people who had not heard anything from the application earlier (including the statements akin if i was still intereted, not having scholarship money avaible, and about how they will respond to me within the next 10 days). Did anyone else get this e-mail???? And should I not get my hopes up about this?
