In my opinion, if you can't find what you're looking for in Dallas, you may be a little too high-maintenance for your own good. If you can, visit the school and take a drive through the residential areas surrounding the campus. The area is going to have tons of yoga studios, pilates, etc. It's an affluent area, and has all the amenities that accompany such an area. Chanel & Jimmy Choo boutiques - Northpark Mall/Neiman Marcus. Bentleys, Ferraris, Aston Martins. I think that being trapped in Dallas isn't that scary of a proposition, particularly with a decent salary in your future. Ross Perot, Mark Cuban, and Troy Aikman all live in the Highland Park/University Park area. Millionaires mixed with billionaires.

I'm flying down to visit SMU for the first time in mid April. Pretty pumped. Hopefully will get to meet with an admissions counselor, going to get a tour, and will get to sit in on a class. Never been to Dallas or SMU before so I'm excited about finally getting to see the campus. Any suggestions for places to eat, things to see (that I wouldn't necessarily get on a tour) both at SMU and around Dallas while I'm there? I will be there from April 15-17th and am just going to rent a car while I'm there. Thanks!

Take advice from a 3rd generation Dallasite who grew up five minutes away from SMU (not a parkie, but closer to Highland Park High School than my zoned DISD high school):

To be honest, there's really not all that much to see in Dallas, unless you like shopping malls--like North Park and the Galleria. There's Dealey plaza--where Kennedy got shot--and the Nasher sculpture garden. The best museums and cultural/historical stuff are in Fort Worth.

I'd say that SMU's campus is easily one of the top five most beautiful in the U.S.--especially this time of year when the flowers and trees are blooming. It's simply gorgeous (and the people are too).

In terms of eating, in general, eat at any Tex Mex place not named Taco Bell/Taco Cabana/Taco Bueno/Chipotle or any barbecue place. You really can't go wrong. Manny's is my personal favorite texmex joint, and it's not all that far from SMU--just a couple of exits down central expressway.

If it wasn't for the fact that I have offers at two top 14s, and don't really want to stay in Dallas (at least initially), I would go to SMU in a heartbeat.

BTW, I never received a "You were not selected for the Sumners" letter. I know I wasn't selected because I asked SMU and received an email back last week. So random though!

gracias....yep i'm set on attending now, i cancelled my trip to atlanta for this weekend

even though emory sounds appealing, it would be foolish to choose over smu since i want to work in dallas

and i think i would love UGA the most, but i don't want to be stuck in georgia for 10+ years even though i do love it there

Still not a 100%. It's either SMU or UH for me. But at the moment SMU is the clear favorite so i went ahead and secured my seat, at least until July 1st.

Dallas-Forth Worth and Houston gained the most new residents of any city -- netting more than 140,000 each -- according to the Census Bureau's annual metropolitan area population estimates released on Tuesday.

In the past decade the Dallas area has added almost 1.3 million people -- more than any other city. As a result, it stands to receive quite a bit more than the $4 billion in federal funds it earned in 2008. And Election Data Services predicts that Texas will pick up at least three more seats in Congress. (It currently has 32 House seats.)

I have been pondering the same thing. It's also about the same percentage that places in big law and clerkships. It would be a double whammy to lose the sholarship and be SOL to be able to pay back debt for taking on sticker price.

I wasn't super worried until ASD and everybody I met seemed to be bright. I guess it will come down to hard work and a substantial amount of good breaks.

I may have gotten my scholarships mixed up but I thoug the SMU scholly had top third stipulations. I'm at work otherwise I'd check. Anybody know for sure?

Yeah, the regular scholarships stipulations only include "enrolling and remaining in good standing."

The Sumners scholarship is the only one that I know of that has a grade stipulation (top third), but the interviews are this week, so, of course, offers haven't been extended yet.

Edit: Its also possible that not ALL of the scholarships have stipulations, plenty of schools do that. My first offer just says "good standing."

I had my roomate read the offer and unless he is illiterate (not entirely out of the question) the offer only stipulates "good standing". It may be different for HS and Hughes. I apologize for the confusion.
