I submitted all of my applications in late September and sent letters in January to every school from which I hadn't received a decision. I can't imagine why it would hurt, and the authors of "Law School Confidential" agree.
I think the only way it may hurt is that updating your application may push it to the back of the list for review (if the school reviews in order completed). I don't know that I would take the information in Law School Confidential as gospel.
Agreed on the law school confidential comment.
I just think it makes a lot more sense to send it as a reaction to being held or waitlisted. First, because they might be expecting documents from you in that case, and second, if you send a LOCI before that happens... then you have less to talk about in any further LOCIs...

By my estimation, fourteen weeks of "complete/under review" dating from October is a de facto hold.

I don't know about that. While law school admissions are done on a rolling basis, it's still true that there's a point in time at every school where they start reviewing applications en masse and sending out decisions. So, if you didn't apply in a specific early decision program or have automatic numbers, you're application date for the purposes of getting a decision is going to be the same as a lot of other people. In other words, you may have applied in October, but if they don't start looking at applications en masse until December, then it's as though you applied in December.
By the way, you said it's been October since you went complete -- when did you interview? I interviewed a full month after I went complete...

You can tell there haven't been many decisions just by looking at how few pages are in this thread....

The 8 week mark starts December 1, no matter how much earlier you were complete earlier than that, so I guess you could consider 2 weeks 'way over,' but it seems a little pushy to me. Their
tweet yesterday about trying to cut down on their call volume suggests to me their getting tired of being bugged by people.

Hey guys. Remember how when we were applying to undergrad, we could send our applications in in October and it wouldn't matter; we still might not hear back till late March or April?
Chill.
Let the folks do their jobs.

Fine, it probably wasn't "waaaay" over... more like "way" over... I was looking more at my submit date than Dec. 1 when I posted that. Thanks for the intel on the tweet, I'll leave them alone for a while.

You know, if they really want to cut down on their call volume, then they should tweet something like: "We're sorry, but we are running three to four weeks behind with some of our applications. If you applied by December 1, we promise that you'll hear back by the end of February."
With the information that NU has provided thus far, it's hard to tell if they're running behind or if there are particular problems with a few applications. I mean, the "8 week turnaround" expectation did not come from TLS folklore or something; it came from the NU Admissions office itself. If NU can't make 8 weeks because of high application volume, then they should make an effort to communicate that fact to the current applicant pool.

not to be a dick, but i think this one i'm going to keep to myself. this program is my top choice and i really tried to pull out all the stops to get off of hold and into NU. I just hope and pray it's enough.

The last time a batch of acceptances went out mid-day on a Friday, there did not appear to be an afternoon batch - just a twitter update.
Still, here's hoping.
