Need is always taken into account. Actual need-based aid from the Financial Aid office is given out without putting significant weight on things like grades and is just based on income/tax information you supply. The awards from them can be substantial (I've heard awards as high as 80% tuition). Merit-based awards are way less predictable or substantial. Need and merit tend to always overlap though; Vanderbilt, for example, gave me a merit-scholarship then told me that counted as my financial aid as well. They'll consider need because law schools are always concerned with their yield statistics. My scores weren't good enough for a merit award, but I got one anyway because I convinced them money was my biggest concern and I would withdraw if I didn't get one (I used softer, subtler language, but you get the picture). Basically, if you have two admitted students and one is rich but has higher scores and one is poor but has lower scores, who are they going to give a scholarship to? The rich kid may deserve it more, but chances are money won't affect his decision, so they may move that money down to the poor kid. That's how need comes into play.midwest17 wrote:Is this really true? Hey just checking in. I just had my interview yesterday. Two question. 1 obviously the email that Dean Cornblatt sent me today he sends to everyone who interviews right? 2. When should I be expecting a decision now that I interviewed and considering my application completed date is 12/17

Re: Georgetown c/o 2017 Applicants Thread (2013-2014)
I'm aware that this is what schools say, but I was under the impression (and myLSN seems to bear this out) that scores do a very good job of predicting aid everywhere except YHS.kraffcook wrote:Need is always taken into account. While your explanation for why they would care about need makes sense, I don't think it's really applicable: there are very few people *so* rich that COA isn't part of the equation. Law schools will recognize that, especially since "need" usually takes parental income into account, but law schools know that many parents don't actually help, even for K-JDs.
And the super-rich people for whom cost actually isn't a factor may be more desirable for the schools anyways, since they're more likely to become big donors.
If Georgetown is actually doing pure need-based grants (i.e. calculating EFC and then giving everyone some percentage of the difference) that would be cool. It's just surprising and seems to go significantly against common wisdom.

I was able to finally get into the admitted students website today, so if you have been trying without luck (and have been accepted) it might be worth a shot to try it.

Yeah. Group interview with Dean Cornblatt. I said some risky things during the interview and I guess that's what did it.outlawscr10 wrote:Seems odd. Did you interview?mulhollanddrive wrote:3.68/171 here

Interesting. I interviewed a while ago and my interviewer said she was going to send everything in that afternoon. Spoke with her a few days later and she talked about the interview materials in the past tense, so I'm mostly sure that all my stuff was submitted. But I didn't get any letter... any chance you might be able to post or PM me about what it (generally) said?
also, good luck to everyone!
thanks!

Dominican Lawyer and I probably got the same e-mail because we both interviewed with Dean Cornblatt. If you didn't interview with him thats probably why you didn't get an e-mail.sandwich wrote:kalyssa wrote:i interviewed a few days ago and got that letter too. at the end of the interview Cornblatt said we would hear back in about 2-3 weeks.Dominican_Lawyer wrote:Hey just checking in.
