To live comfortably in UC how vital is it to have a car?

Re: UIUC 2015
Comfortably, I would say it's essential. But it depends on a number of factors. Where you live, how often you want to go to other places, if you care about having to bum rides all the time, if you're used to not having a car. I came here from a city where everyone has a car and I would feel totally helpless without one in Champaign. But people do it.thatjuanguy wrote:To live comfortably in UC how vital is it to have a car?

Re: UIUC 2015
If you live near campus or anywhere near any of the bus routes, then no. Everything is just a 5-10 minute walk and the mtd bus system at Illinois is great. Most busses run every 10mins and continue until 3am. The website even has phone apps where you can check on the up-to-the-minute live bus schedule and see if there are any delays. Lived off-campus, north of green st and fourth st and found everything within walking/short bus ride distance. There was even a great grocery store a block away (County Market).Ludovico Technique wrote:Comfortably, I would say it's essential. But it depends on a number of factors. Re: UIUC 2015
It definitely depends. Personally I wouldn't be comfortable having to spend all my time in campustown or relying on a bus every time I wanted to go somewhere.
This seems to be a big difference between undergrad and law school students. My GF is in undergrad and people think she's crazy because she lives west of downtown Champaign

I will be going up in the next 2 weeks. Trying to narrow down my list for apartments I will be visiting.
Besides Windsor West, anyone have some luxury apartments/condos they might want to recommend?

Re: UIUC 2015
Any thoughts on finding an apartment and roommates without seeing/meeting either in person? Recently decided on UIUC and currently living in Madrid, Spain, so just now getting around to housing. How tough is the renting market in UC? Any experiences trying to find housing only through internet, phone, and Skype? I won't get back to the states until early July, so any thoughts on trying to finding a place then? Thanks!

Re: UIUC 2015
Can any current Illinois students (law or otherwise) comment on how parking on campus works? I will most likely be living 3+ miles away and driving in every day.
Where are the most convenient places to park near the Law School? Is lot C4 an option for students?
Another poster earlier in the thread said they bought a permit to park at the ARC (I think its E-24?). This is attractive because using the facility is important to me. That being said, is there a shuttle or bus that I can take from the ARC to the law building or do I have to hoof it? Are shuttles/buses free for law students? Is there a centralized source where I can find this information? I've been relying on this map:
http://www.parking.illinois.edu/campus_ ... ingmap.pdf
Any information a current student could send my way will be greatly appreciated.
EDIT Everything I posted here was based off the assumption that the law building was somewhere else, please disregard.

Re: UIUC 2015
Disregard my last post - just realized that Google Maps has the wrong location for the college of law and I was completely lost in what I was doing.
Parking at the ARC seems like a super convenient option only a couple blocks from the law building. Can anyone comment on doing that? Can you park there 24/7 with a permit? The pricetag sucks, but what can you do.

Re: UIUC 2015
The ARC is really close and not a bad walk at all. Personally I've parked in the meters right in front of the law school since the beginning of 1l. It's like a dollar per hour or something. I've never done the math so I don't know if it's cheaper but it's a lot more convenient. But I also just go to class and then leave right away. If you were studying in the library or hanging out in the building between classes it might get too expensive. I think there is a lot designated for law students to park in, somewhere over by assembly hall, and there's a shuttle that takes you to the building but I've never used it so I don't know the details on that.

How convenient is the shuttle lot? It actually looks pretty close to the school, I can't imagine it being much of a long walk at all.

I wouldn't want to walk it every day, that's for sure. Especially not with a backpack full of law school books. It's probably only like a 15 minute walk or so though

I am familiar with the area... but I was a little shocked that the travel website I use didn't have any hotels available for Champaign.... I thought there were a lot more hotels? Maybe I'll try another website. Must be something going down this weekend b/c everything is full.

Hahah hate to burst your bubble, Ludo, but hotels aren't full for Ebertfest. It's undergrad moms' weekend: I guess the hotels book up a year in advance for it.
....But Ebertfest is awesome and everyone should go.
