Yeah, but it's some what true. I think the first stat is substantiated by their official materials, and the second is from personal experience from taking classes that were also reqs for engineering students.Mal Reynolds wrote:This is so blatantly racist I hope it's sarcastic.jeninamillion wrote:Eh. Lol. I'm not arguing about the demographics of Berkeley. I'm sure you're not lying, nor is that racist. What's racist is the general disappointment and implication that Berkeley is weird because of its ethnic makeup. So again, Lolz.

LOL yeah all the UC schools have a similar percentages of Asians because they can't do affirmative action and since Asians have the best grades and test scores, thats your result. Its not strange at all for Berkeley or California, its common.
Edit: this is only in regards to their undergraduate admissions, pretty sure the grad schools are not like this

FYI, I am a Chinese applicant. (I did my undergrad in a Chinese univ.) UC schools are famous for being friendly with Chinese students no matter which major they are studying. They typically admit a large number of applicants with a Chinese undergrad degree each year.

Still none of this explains Why they favor women so much. That's a big disparity between men and women. While I like the ratio, I am worried I will be discriminated against as a man. I mean 60/40! Are they trying to be Jurassic Park?

Lol, you won't be discriminated as a man. Women tend to get better grades as undergrads, and plenty of grad departments are skewed towards women. Berkeley's demographics -- although extreme -- are not that surprising.jpal13 wrote:Still none of this explains Why they favor women so much. That's a big disparity between men and women. I don't think schools really take gender into account when they make admissions decisions. Women do tend to have higher grades and Berkeley tends to weight GPA more than other schools, so really not that surprising. Additionally, it could be that they admitted equal amounts of men and women and by some coincidence larger proportion of women than men decided to attend.thecactus wrote:Lol, you won't be discriminated as a man. Yeah. When you're tilting things in favor of one metric (either gpa or LSAT) more than other schools, it stands to reason that there's a lot of virgin territory at the business end of that, so to speak.Boston_NYG2245 wrote:I don't think schools really take gender into account when they make admissions decisions. In other words, someone with a 4.33/164 isn't likely to get in anywhere better than Berkeley, and they'll usually get a very high yield from those kind of candidates. Similarly, NYU, who try really aggressively to maintain their 172 median, give a lot of offers to kids with 172/3.4+s. Someone with a 3.6 and a 172 isn't likely to get an offer from a higher ranked school than NYU. It's just the case that the first type of student is disproportionately female, and the latter type is disproportionately male. Females have higher gpas on averages, and are slightly less likely to score above 170 on the LSAT. NYU's having this same problem right now in reverse. The last class was something like 60/40 male, and apparently they're less than happy about that.

Are there any current Berkeley students on this forum that were out of state applicants? I'd like to ask you a few questions, if you don't mind (especially if you didn't have shoo-in numbers).

Anyone know if Berkeley releases things on Thursday or Friday? Or are they more of a Monday release school?

If I wasn't a victim in the 1/09 massacre of people who went UR on 11/22, is it safe to say that I'm now in committee review or waitlisted? Or is there still a huge chance of rejection. I'm a splitter so my chances at Berkeley aren't that great, numbers-wise, but it is my undergrad and I got a LOR from a Berkeley Law professor who taught undergrad.MrShneebly wrote:I saw Dead Tom talk about it in this interview, but it's still pretty vague. Oh my god...that would be awesome. If that muppet was in charge of decisions. Somehow.

I am really hoping there will be a ton of news next week. It would be worth it if lots of 11/22'ers and 12/12'ers heard back next week. Hopefully they are doing a Chicago-sized batch for next week.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
