Re: U. Miami Applicants c/o 2014
Oh and yes heat, I did take a prep class. Scored a 160 in October. I registered for the December test, but didn't have any time to study - at all. I was going to let the 160 ride, and just take an absence. I felt really unprepared. Nevertheless, I woke up that morning, felt good, went in and got a 164. It was pretty amusing. In hindsight the prep class didn't do too much for me.

Am I the only one here taking out loans for sticker at Miami?

Didn't you get into Emory? Cause you should totally go to Emory!nodummy wrote:Am I the only one here taking out loans for sticker at Miami?

Edit: wait, that was drummerboy, not you nodummy. Sorry for the confusion. Loans suck, but if you want to be a lawyer and work in South Florida, this is one way to accomplish the goal. I wouldn't advise one way or the other. Its a personal decision.

Re: U. Miami Applicants c/o 2014
I visited Miami Law last week and really want to attend, but like others here I am not so sure about paying the $40,000 a year tuition with loans.
As a rough estimate, I am figuring that the monthly student loan payment for borrowing $120,000 would be about $956 per month for 20 years... thats for tuition alone (No living expense included) and isn't even considering the interest that accrues on the unsubsidized and the grad plus loans during law school or the origination fees.
That monthly payment plus the payment for previous student loans makes for a heavy burden to overcome... even with a good job as a lawyer after graduation. (Which isn't a given anymore)

Was flipping through the channels last night and caught The Real Housewives of Miami. The people on this show were just hideous. I would suggest a Real Law Students of Miami, but I'm not sure a show about depressed and soon to be bald people living on Ramen Noodles would have the same draw.

Oh I didn't take note of who was the wife of someone famous. I came in during a dinner party scene. There was a guy cooking frozen Salmon and a woman with WAY too much plastic surgery offering psychic readings. Her face was mutilated. I don't say that lightly either, it was unbelievable. Hope that wasn't the work of a former UM med student!snakebones wrote:haha very true! but Scottie Pippen's wife ain't too badJustathought wrote:Was flipping through the channels last night and caught The Real Housewives of Miami. I don't think they will. If I were on the waitlist at Miami, I would make other plans and hope Miami came through later in the year. They accept a lot of people, expecting to yield very few of those accepted, but I think the sheer amount of acceptances allows them to fill the class.fdr123 wrote:would really like to know when they will start accepting people off waitlists? anyone have ideas?
Sorry to be a downer. I could be off by quite a bit, but that's just my gut feeling.

Thanks for the insight. With the success you've had prior to law school, I have no doubt your chances at getting the most out of UM are great. It sucks to see the anchor your GPA has on your application. You've obviously done your research, are aware of what you are getting into, and won't be assaulted by interest on your loans because of the money you've saved. UM has a strong presence in south Florida; I've spent a good amount of time interning within the court system during my undergrad and there is no shortage of UM graduates, from the bench to the attorneys. Sure, its a regional school, but its a pretty good place to be stuck in. I know I'll be coming back.Justathought wrote:Oh and yes heat, I did take a prep class. Scored a 160 in October. At the end of the day Miami is a strong regional school in a region I would actually want to work. I went back and forth with it and Rutgers, but NYC is just not a safe bet from Rutgers. I like S. Florida more than New Jersey. Plus, although I could have gone to Brooklyn at sticker, Miami is actually a little cheaper, and I like the feel I get from the school.

I was actually considering Brooklyn (at sticker) over Miami as well, but I think overall Miami is better. And I know plenty of attorneys in NYC who graduated from UM so I'm not worried about going back to New York in a few years.Justathought wrote:Thanks for the encouragement Heat. I know how it feels to be in that boat so I'll give you some insight to calm your nerves.fdr123 wrote:would really like to know when they will start accepting people off waitlists? anyone have ideas?
Last year they started accepting those who were on hold/waitlisted after the first seat deposit deadline on April 15th. If i remember correctly they started accepting people 5 or 6 days after the deposit was due, so around April 21st.
I recommend that you double check by going to last years thread and reading the posts from April 15th onwards. Based on what I remember they only accepted a dozen or so after the first deposit deadline and that was it. check out the thread:

This should give you some hope. GL

Re: U. Miami Applicants c/o 2014
According to LSN, last year, Miami pulled 3 people off the WL. However, the year prior, they pulled 10. Keep in mind LSN is a small sampling -it's not scientific at all. BUT, with a drop in rankings this year, the economy -people less willing to take on debt, and fewer LSAT takers, I think this year may be a good year of WL applicants...
JMO.
Mind you, with this in mind, Miami may have wait-listed more or fewer people.

Good to hear that about the wait list. Seems like those hoping to get in still have a fighting chance.

Something also to keep in mind, they already extended their first round of offers to people they deferred at the end of February.

Well we have ties to NY so that's a big plus. I know quite a few practicing attorneys in NY, so that could help too. In addition, I feel like there are a lot of people who, for whatever reason, split their time between the two cities.i<3ny wrote:I was actually considering Brooklyn (at sticker) over Miami as well, but I think overall Miami is better. Still, NYC would be a very unexpected bonus which would likely result from top grades. Though, given top grades, I would probably try and transfer up north anyway, if I felt a desire to return to NY. I'm going into this banking on Florida, which is a very nice place to live and work.

I really want to just take that plunge and do it, but that gigantic loan laughing at me in three years is obviously the biggest drawback. No UG loans for me, but still roughly 160k is immense.nodummy wrote:Am I the only one here taking out loans for sticker at Miami?

I'm about 80% there. After visiting the last remaining schools and some serious contemplating this weekend, I should know if I'm sending in that deposit or not.

I suggest a movement toward Miami avatars for all those currently planning to attend. I also feeltheheat should at least get on board with a Lebron or D Wade avatar in a show of solidarity. At least until he starts at FSU.SixStrings11 wrote:Michael Irvin is an all-time great. No need to change it, regardless of the school you choose to attend.Justathought wrote:Updated avatar.![]()

On a more serious note, does anyone have any housing suggestions? I want to live very close, so I was thinking of finding something decent in Coral Gables. I've heard Coconut Grove is also nice, but is it too far away? I really want a 10 minute commute, max.

I live right across the street from the Miami campus right now. It's not cheap. If money isn't an issue for you and you want to live close look into The Cloisters and Red Road Commons. You can walk to campus from either of those and they're both relatively nice.Justathought wrote: On a more serious note, does anyone have any housing suggestions? Coconut Grove is a quick drive, but with US1 traffic it can get a little irritating. But that area is also really nice depending on where you go. I also knew people that lived there and went to the Law School, so people definitely do that.
Housing is a huge issue of me though if I go to Miami. I don't want to stay in my apartment because the cost just keeps going up every year and it's getting ridiculous..

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
Now there's a charge.
