Wow this is really good to know. Is northwestern the only school with an appeal process?Finickywalrus wrote:Unrelated post, but just so everyone is aware, Northwestern has a dependency appeal process that allows you to be considered independent if you have supported yourself for 30 months prior to matriculation. If that is the case, DO NOT send in your CSS profile before initiating the dependency appeal process.
I have several years of work experience (along with all of the extensive documentation they require to validate it), but the mere fact that I sent in my CSS profile (with my parent information) before beginning the process makes me ineligible to be considered independent. It doesn't matter if you're unaware of the appeal process when you send in the CSS profile. They will not make an exception. And I guess they can't disregard the parent info or retract the CSS profile. I think it's ridiculous, so I'm hoping this post will help someone avoid my mistake!
tl;dr Even if you're technically independent at Northwestern (30 months of self-support prior to matriculation) simply sending in your CSS profile will automatically make you dependent.
As far as I'm aware. Though I can only speak for Mich, UVA, and Berk.jlc058 wrote:Wow this is really good to know. If you have already submitted the CSS profile to a different school with parental information, can you delete this information when you submit it to Northwestern? Going through the motions of adding a school, it looks like you should be able to clear out all the parent information fields except stuff like name and date of birth, but I don't want to clear all the fields, click continue, then get an error message and have to re-enter it all.Finickywalrus wrote:As far as I'm aware. I'm not an expert but I think for Northwestern you submit the appeal first and then once you're determined to be independent, they give you instructions for CSS. I never realized there was an appeal process, so I submitted everything right away (as I did at Berk) to get a scholarship decision asap. In your case, I'm not sure you can lose eligibility since you're independent according to age, not work history. Maybe just email the office to be certain?pln2017 wrote:If you have already submitted the CSS profile to a different school with parental information, can you delete this information when you submit it to Northwestern? I am old enough to be considered independent, but this makes me worried that I will also accidentally waive that status by submitting my CSS profile with parental information.

I think everyone's status does update at once- it is your letter being uploaded to the delivery system that comes in waves. But I think if you were getting a decision today you would not sill say complete (like I do WOMP)proteinshake wrote:everyone's status doesn't update at once right?
