Re: Univ of Georgia
Thank you to all who have replied!
We are signing a lease this week on a place in Oconee County. It is 10 miles from the law school, but I am not concerned about the distance. I have had hour long commutes to DC, so 15 minutes is nothing.
We are really getting excited. We should be fully moved in by the last week of July, but we take possession of the house on July 1.
Anyone up for easy pick up basketball games to blow off stress?

Oconee is nice and I have met some cool people from there in my five years in Athens. Congrats about Law School. I am an undergraduate here in the business school and our facilities and professors are second to none. I am sure the Law School is no different. It is actually right across from Terry on North Campus. Definitely would be down for a pick-up game at Ramsey or near Myers Hall sometime.

Re: Univ of Georgia
1. Admissions told me exactly the opposite. Everything should be somewhat equal between the sections. Obviously, it won't be perfect, but the gross disparities you are worried about shouldn't be an issue.TheBigMediocre wrote:I'll be a 1L next year at UGA. Thanks for offering to answer questions. So:jennylynn wrote:At least the new website is nifty, right?![]()
I'm a 1L at UGA, so does anybody have any questions while you're waiting?
1. Admissions told me that they assign sections randomly and don't use an LSAT/GPA index to try to create "equal" sections. I'm a little worried that this can create a lottery.... You could be a scholarship student in a section with a bunch of people who squeaked in or you could be in a section with all the full-ride kids, making it far harder to be at the top of the curve in one section then in the other. What is your experience with this?
2. At ASD, someone mentioned that UGA has an early-start program that is going to begin about 2 weeks before everyone else. Has this been done in years past? If so, do you have any idea about what the program consisted of?
Thanks again.
2. They did that last year, and some of my classmates did it. I don't think it helped them beyond a little calming of the nerves.

I'm interested in that early start program, is there any link with details? I have been researching the school as one of my top choices pretty heavily, and also visited, but I've never heard of that until seeing it here. If this exists it would work out perfectly with the leaving-my-job timing.

Info on it hasn't come out quite yet. I only learned of it from a 2-minute chat with a professor at the ASW open house. Admissions said more information will be forthcoming.iShotFirst wrote:I'm interested in that early start program, is there any link with details? Re: Univ of Georgia
The bolded is pretty much the impression I got when I visited. My impressions was that they were a bit frustrated with everyone that put in the first deposit because they know very well that so many people are putting in two deposits this year.dagobahdweller wrote:
That is what I meant by 'cryptic'. Filling it out was simple; however, if this is an attempt to "weed people out", it seems to me about as effective as the (tiny) seat deposit.
This suggests a further question; namely, supposing that UGA Law received responses from more people than it [strike]expected[/strike] wanted, how bad is this for the school? No doubt the first year sections are a bit larger, but unless they promised more scholarship money than they actually possess, I don't really see how having a large(r) class is a negative. Any thoughts?

Dear X:
We have received your $50 First Deposit. To retain your seat in the Georgia Law Class of 2013, you must complete and submit this form by May 17, 2010. You may also access this form by copying and pasting the following link in your browser. Failure to respond could result in your seat being offered to a candidate on the waitlist.
Did they not send it to everyone? Why some people and not others?

I thought they sent it to everyone that had sent in the $50. Some people already sent in the first and second deposits and so didnt get it. I could be wrong though.

i'm going to georgia and love the school, but i think they made a couple of mistakes this cycle. i believe that they were pretty loose with acceptances early in the cycle (i.e. 164+ and you were in, regardless of relatively low gpas or no softs). also, they only required the $50 deposit all the way until june 15. as a result, they were unable to offer accpentances to very qualified candidates later in the cycle. i believe that they received over 300 deposits for the 230-240 typical seats. of course, many of these students have deposited elsewhere too, but i believe georgia is in scramble mode. thus, the rather unusual friday email. i'm guessing that there will be 0 WL acceptances and still a very big class. anyone else have thoughts?

Re: Univ of Georgia
I don't agree about them being too loose with acceptances early on. I think people who apply in February/March 1st know that they are probably screwing themselves by doing that. That goes for nearly any school. My numbers aren't spectacular, but I applied the night of January 26th(pretty late) and still got in.rapstar wrote:i'm going to georgia and love the school, but i think they made a couple of mistakes this cycle. i believe that they were pretty loose with acceptances early in the cycle (i.e.
The fifty dollar deposit was a little low, IMO, but I was grateful at the time to not be shelling out the 750-900 dollars other were for similar schools. The class I think would have been large either way because Georgia jumped into the T30.

Re: Univ of Georgia
I agree that it was nice not to have to shell out a lot of money, but why not just flip the deoposits? Make students pay $250 on April 30th and then $50 on June 15th. Presumably, students who were not seriously considering attending wouldn't pay the $250 where as they did pay the $50. Then by June 15th, most students will know for sure where they are going so if someone wasn't going to georgia they of course wouldn't pay $50 more to them.eandy wrote:I don't agree about them being too loose with acceptances early on. Re: Univ of Georgia
I'm guessing, though, that this is not the first year they've had a 50 dollar deposit. It was the boost in the rankings/economy issues that pushed more people than expected towards Georgia deposits.rapstar wrote: I agree that it was nice not to have to shell out a lot of money, but why not just flip the deoposits? I do know that they have told several people on the WL that they will not be extending them an offer. In effect, they were WL, Rejected. That said, I think that this has a way of happening many years.
I was as pleased (and surprised?) as the next person with the increase in the rankings. However, the rankings came out on the 15th widely (I think they were leaked sometime on the 14th); thus, I don't think the new ranking drove many people to choose UGA. On the other hand, the economy might certainly affect where people would choose to go. I definitely think the small seat deposit helps people who are riding WLs other places or waiting to see if they get more money elsewhere to "wait and see". As for the "double seat deposit list" published by LSAC, even if this happens unless there is something that expressly forbids someone from being on two lists at once, I don't see what affect this will have.
All of this brings me to my main question, which is, what is the longterm affect of having a large class? If, as some people have suggested, UGA was "loose" with acceptances early in the cycle, doesn't having more students in a class mean that there are more spots in the top X%? If the people accepted early really shouldn't have been (which is the practical implication of saying UGA was "loose" with acceptances), then won't this contribute to more students being below X%? Thus, I don't see how having more students is a bad thing --- for other students unless, of course, there are simply more qualified students, but even if this is the case, I don't think that anyone at Harvard is askew because they accept a large class (of qualified students).
As far as scheduling goes, the first year is set --- so we just have a larger class to be with all day (doesn't sound like a bad thing to me!). For 2L and 3L year, is there really a shortage of classes to register for?
The only downside that I see is that if you were on a list to be offered more money to come, you might not get that money now. Additionally, if the university extended more $ than it really had to offer for this year and most people accept, then they will have less $ available for next year, which will make it tougher to attract the top students that are required to keep the T-30 ranking. Does anyone think this has happened?
Anyone want to see a big class?

Re: Univ of Georgia
I think a big class is a bad thing for one reason: inreased competition for a limited number of jobs. If Georgia is normally able to find work for 95% of its 230 students that means there are roughly 220 jobs available for Georgia grads. Not to mention that there are probably only 30-40 potential "biglaw" jobs available. How would it feel to be in a class of 300 students who are competing for 220 jobs, only 35 of which will pay 110k+? I would feel better if I was in a class of 215 students competing for the same 220 jobs.

I can see this being in no way beneficial to me. I love UGA but the thought of a huge class makes me more likely to take an offer from Vandy if they pull me off of their waitlist.dagobahdweller wrote:

I'm trying to decide between UGA (I'm in-state, plus a scholarship that results in me paying 10k per year tuition) and Georgetown part-time (no money). Being close to family is a big deal. Anyone have any thoughts?
