If you are really determined on getting into HYS, I would sit out the year. Seriously. All it would require for YOU is to sit out and wait. If you are the same morning star as the one on LSN, your numbers are great -- it's just that you applied very late in the cycle. Try your luck next cycle. I'm sure it will work out way better, even with respect to merit aid in other institutions.morningstar wrote:DLS. UR 2/11. In all honesty, I feel like this broke something in me. I'm in a really low place right now. I've had other rejections, they didn't hurt. This feels like the end of a dream.
I have other good options, I'm trying to remember that. But just the same, I think Stanford will always be the one that got away. Sorry to cry all over the thread, I'm going to attempt to sack up and accept this with grace.

It's good advice, and I've definitely considered it, but now I've got a bit of a confidence complex (in that I don't have much at the moment). I'd be afraid to wait a year, roll the dice again, and have it be a function of weak softs or some other factor that they just don't like about me, rather than the fact that I applied late. Then if I didn't get in again next cycle, I'd feel like I had wasted a year when I'm already above the average age for a 1L.Oskosh wrote:If you are really determined on getting into HYS, I would sit out the year. 176, 3.9 GPA...
I would take those chances w/ YHS, as well as a good qualifier for full tuition at some T14... ESPECIALLY if you have work experience of 5+. How old are you if you don't mind me asking? If I sit out this year and wait until the next, I would be 25 when I attend law school... It has to be around that age, right?

Morningstar, I would be absolutely shocked if you couldn't get into H (with a good shot at S) with your stats no matter what your softs look like; if you strike out this cycle my guess would be late app or not-so-great interview/personal statement, which are both super fixable next cycle! The majority of students at HYS are multiple years out of undergrad, so I don't think one more year would matter much unless you have a personal situation that warrants a hurry. I'm not counseling you to take a year off against your judgement, but I wouldn't let your frustration/fears dictate your reasoning!morningstar wrote:It's good advice, and I've definitely considered it, but now I've got a bit of a confidence complex (in that I don't have much at the moment). Older. By nearly a decade. I waited a very long time to decide to go back to school.Oskosh wrote:176, 3.9 GPA...

Thank you for this. You're really awesome. I'll admit I've been wallowing and eating my feelings most of today, but I'm glad that I have a place to air my worries and woes to people that actually GET why this has me so down. I'm definitely considering holding off for a year, I just honestly don't know what I would do with myself in the meantime. I mean, travel would be awesome, but I don't want to get some mediocre crap job for a year since it took me so long to sack up and actually finish my education and move on to law school as it is. I'm worried I'd get "stuck" again and keep putting it off indefinitely. Moving straight from undergrad to law school was my way of keeping myself focused on the goal.radio1nowhere wrote:Morningstar, I would be absolutely shocked if you couldn't get into H (with a good shot at S) with your stats no matter what your softs look like; if you strike out this cycle my guess would be late app or not-so-great interview/personal statement, which are both super fixable next cycle! Having said that, I'm in at Berkeley, and with quite a decent bit of money too. That's what I would consider to be my "backup" school at this point, but I really just think I let myself get over-confident about my Stanford chances so the DLS this morning really knocked me on my ass.
Thanks again, I definitely needed a friendly ear to vent to.

Who cares about average age? I'm almost 28.
Morningstar, I gotta tell you... when I applied to undergrad, I got rejected from pretty much every school I wanted to attend (and waitlisted at my third choice). I was crushed--at first. Then I decided to fully apply myself to the offers I got, ended up getting off the waitlist, and had a great school experience. Looking back on it, I got just as good of a shot at where I am now as I would have at those other two schools.
Stanford's a great school, but you're into some other great schools already. Berkeley is kickass in a number of ways (saying this as a Stanford alum and bay area resident) and I'm sure you're going to have even more options.
So, like any defeat, take a little time to cry, feel sad, and then move on. You've got stuff to do!

I just wanted to say thank you to all of you guys. Your show of support is much more than I expected, and I really do appreciate you taking the time to talk me through something that countless other people have handled much better than I did.
I'm not going to deny that I'm going to take tonight to drown my sorrows in the really unwise amount of wine and ice cream that I bought on my way home, but tomorrow I'm going to jump into making my Berkeley plans.
Best of luck to all of those still in the running, and may the odds be ever in your favor.

You were rejected from all of YHS? Those are amazing numbers and should be borderline automatic at HLSmorningstar wrote:That be me. I'm not sure where I fell short, but I apparently did.crazyhazy wrote:Wait, are those morning's scores?Oskosh wrote:176, 3.9 GPA...

Those are amazing!! Tho 3.9 is odd bc a 3.85 and 3.94 makes a huge difference. Either way it sounds like you are an outstanding candidate.js1663 wrote:You were rejected from all of YHS? Haven't heard from YLS or HLS yet. Stanford was my first choice because I wanted to stay on the west coast, but if I hear from one of them my plans might be a-changing.js1663 wrote:You were rejected from all of YHS? Morningstar, pretty sure it's the lack of cat avatar. Only explanation.
I'm kidding. I love your avatar even though I hate snakes. And I feel ya on the west coast thing. I'm a west coast girl. I live in CT right now for grad school and not a day goes by that I don't long for the west coast best coast.
I know it is rough to miss your dream. No shame in ice cream and wine.
I'm on the older side too (finishing grad school this year), and my YLS friend turned 36 this year. He didn't do undergrad until he was 28. He got into Yale. Don't give up hope on YLS... Though New Haven < Palo Alto.

Don't mean to jump in here, but age should certainly not weigh you down if you are considering sitting out a year. I've met several people at ASWs who started anywhere from 27 to 37. Def not a big deal and nothing to feel self-conscious about.WhoReviewedThis wrote:Morningstar, pretty sure it's the lack of cat avatar. Only explanation.

If you are concerned with Bay living, Harvard and Berkeley do exchanges for 3L year (if you decide on H). And other EC schools have externships for a semester in the Bay. Plus, even at an EC school you can work in the Bay post-JD. You are not in bad position whatsoever if that is your LT goal.
I agree with quadsbaby that if you start exploring the opportunities at your present options, you'll find some exciting ideas on how to shape your education for the next 3 years. And if all else fails, 2 people transferred to Stanford from Berkeley last year (among other schools), so there's that.....

Morning, your scores are incredible, and I am sure you have good news on the way from at least one of Y/H!
Also, I visited B for ASW and loved it
I think it's a really good option to have if you want to stay on the WC, and I'm sure you can negotiate even more $$$

According to LSN from last year's applicants, today was the last day that anyone got accepted without first being waitlisted. Unless I'm missing something, this would suggest that calls are nearly done with.

I feel like they are more behind this year than they were before. They haven't released acceptances like they did last cycle.

MyLSN shows two acceptances in late April and one on May 1. I would expect a handful of calls next month.Kip wrote:According to LSN from last year's applicants, today was the last day that anyone got accepted without first being waitlisted. Yeah, I think so too. Last year there was a pretty big wave by Stanford sizes around last Friday and this Tuesday/Wednesday. Unless there was a wave that somehow missed both TLS and LSN aside from that one dude, I think there should be more calls. It makes sense that they're a bit behind, tbh, considering that acceptances started late this year and that ASW is later this year, too.Oskosh wrote:I feel like they are more behind this year than they were before.
