Hmm... I wonder if I will be getting something then. I thought they were only going to do full tuitions because I hadn't seen anything else.

I was just looking at some of the other graduate schools at Iowa and I noticed that the Creative Writing MFA is considered by some rankings organizations as the best in the country. I had no idea. I doubt I'll be able to swing a JD, MFA but it's really exciting to know that Iowa's MFA program is so prestigious.

It could very well be the best in the world. There are some people who have gone to law school, practiced for a while, then went back for an MFA. There are a lot more people who did the MFA and then went to law school. I don't think both can be accomplished though. I think you have to teach in the MFA program and that would be tough to do.

That's a good question, I probably should have cleared that up when I wrote my original post. The prospect of working for a few years (in Des Moines for example) and saving up some money, then going back to the university for the MFA program is what I find exciting. Like Opie said, there are some people who practice for a time then go back and get their MFA. Iowa's magnanimous scholarship will give me a little freedom as far as career options go (hopefully).

I'm wondering about this too.

Smumps, is it possible that you were offered a RA position that gives you in-state tuition for your 2L and 3L years, and you didn't factor that in? I'm only asking because I got an offer that was basically full tuition that is right around 70% of tuition if you don't take into account the lower in-state rate for the second and third year. Of course, this could just be coincidence and you may have only gotten 70%, but the fact that everyone has gotten full tuition besides you and that you are out of state would make this a fairly impressive one.

Very frustrated. I've looked through this thread and can only find people bitching about only the people who mention scholarship info., but see nothing in regards to scholarship info. Could someone let me know when they send it without everyone grabbing their pitchforks? Tx!

Can you post more details about what it says exactly? This could be a full scholarship... For instance, if you're out of state, they give you a scholarship for first year out of state tuition, plus second and third year in state tuition, with the requirement you get an RA position so that you'd only owe in state tuition those second and third years. As such, it works out to be full tuition.

I hope that makes sense, it's Thursday - my brain is tired.

Also, isn't it weird that Iowa has a stipulation of top 37.5%? Why 37.5? All other schools have given me a 40% stipulation. I'm wondering if there's something a bit fishy about this...

37.5% = 3/8. They apparently divide into eighths rather than into tenths. Not that odd. Think about it. It's saying that everyone who is halfway above median and below top quarter keeps their scholarship. It's fishy if you're a fan of base 10 numbers, but otherwise, it makes some sense.

Some do top third, Drake does top 35%. I think it's just a school preference.

Maybe this will help clear up the confusion a bit. If you begin law school at Iowa paying out-of-state tuition as a 1L, you pay out-of-state tuition for 2L and 3L as well unless you manage to get a gig as a Research Assistant.

Someone I intern with is finishing up at Iowa this semester. He paid out-of-state tuition as a 1L. As a 2L, he was able to get an RA gig, so he got to pay in-state tuition. This year as a 3L, he is not an RA, so he is back to paying out-of-state tuition.

Outside of top 10%, the GPA cutoffs are at 12.5% and 37.5%. So I guess the school sets that stipulation to make it easier for them.

Yeah, that's my issue with it I think! 37.5% is just too hard to predict! And it's also difficult to compare with scholarships at other schools with different stipulations. Wouldn't it suck to be one of those students in that 2.5% difference between 37.5% and 40%?
