Is it that expensive compared to other options? It's cheaper than my current living situation (though I'm outside Boston) and that's not in including electricity, heat, 12 meals a month, and the cost of paying part of my rent in the summer when I have a subletter. Seems like a good price
The lawyers club is a great option as a 1L. You might also consider the new munger dorm--which is insanely nice.
The lawyers club isn't overpriced once you factor in the value of all the meals and the convenience of living right next to the law school. The other thing to keep in mind is that it's unlikely you'll stay in Ann Arbor for the summer. With the LC, if you decide to stay in Ann Arbor, it's easy and cheap to sublet in A2 for the summer (so many students leave town), and if you decide to go elsewhere then you're not stuck trying to sublet. $13,080 (food included) for the year is quite reasonable.
In terms of other housing options. There's a pretty good mix of apartment buildings and townhouses around Ann Arbor. However, the houses tend to go early. Most are already rented for next fall. The apartment units that will remain available next summer tend to be a bit on the pricey end, as they capture people who aren't super well versed in renting cheaply in Ann Arbor. The LC or Munger would avoid all of the frustration with having to do that. If you're comparing to a large city, you might also consider a) no need for a car in Ann Arbor (just have zip car in case you need one), and b) public transportation (buses) is covered by tuition. The bus to the Detroit airport is $12. The train or bus to Chicago tends to run $20–$40.
