Per Spivey, applicants scoring 175+ on the LSAT have dropped off by 20% (now only ~450 applicants total). Given that that's where much of HYS's incoming classes are going to be drawn from, those schools, Harvard especially, are going to have to accept pretty much everyone scoring north of 173 to maintain their medians. If you're Columbia, why admit someone with a 174 / 3.9 if A) their numbers aren't good enough for a Butler and B) they're probably getting into HYS anyway, given the above?kfb2112 wrote:Is it possible that Columbia will be shrinking their class size this year? Seems to be one possible reason that people with near auto admit numbers are getting held.

It seems like they're accepting/reserving their borderline candidates and YP'ing the H/S locks, while waiting around with many of us who fall right at/below Harvard's medians. That's just my impression.Fawkes wrote:I think quite a few people fall into this category.LawBron James wrote:WuddupMack.Hambleton wrote:Who else from Sept/Oct/Nov hasn't heard anything??Feeling neglected by Columbia.

Re: Columbia c/o 2018 Applicants (2014-2015 cycle)
I was hoping to hear back in time to know whether or not I can go to their ASDs since I'll be in NY for NYU's. At this point, I feel like I'll never hear back. Starting to get concerned that they just made a paper airplane out of my app or accidentally set it on fire over a candle or something. D: I never was good with suspense...

Yeah, I'm going up to NYU for ASW and was considering visiting Columbia while I did that, but I feel like it would be weird to tour the school while looking longingly at the admitted students walking around.Fawkes wrote:I was hoping to hear back in time to know whether or not I can go to their ASDs since I'll be in NY for NYU's. Held today. Considering withdrawing b/c already in at HLS and assuming this means no $$.

By the way, how exactly does one withdraw from an applied school? Is there a unique process for each school or do you essentially email the admissions office and tell them that you're withdrawing?

If you haven't received a decision yet (including hold), you can just e-mail their admissions offices. But for some schools, if you're placed on reserve or are held, there is sometimes a form to fill out. Not sure if that's the case with Columbia.ub3r wrote:By the way, how exactly does one withdraw from an applied school? Yeah. I'm worried I'll just exude the "I don't belong here" vibe if I try to stealthily sneak into a tour.LawBron James wrote: Yeah, I'm going up to NYU for ASW and was considering visiting Columbia while I did that, but I feel like it would be weird to tour the school while looking longingly at the admitted students walking around.
In the past, it seems that some people who were held later got offered $$ or even Butlers, so it may be worth just waiting if you think you might go given they cover up to half of tuition.ElizabethKB wrote:Held today. Considering withdrawing b/c already in at HLS and assuming this means no $$.
Same here except mid-November submit. Offered a named full-tuition scholarship at a peer school as well. I wonder if anyone in that position has been WL'd/Denied by CLS before or if I'll be the first.Pau.C. wrote:I'm in almost the exact same position.ballcaps wrote:

Re: Columbia c/o 2018 Applicants (2014-2015 cycle)
For those who've been held -- are you writing a LOCI?
I get the impression from the email giving us a deadline for LOCIs that they're pseudo-required to avoid WL/ding, but I'm interested to see how others are reading it.
Also, any thoughts on whether it's better to submit soon or to wait until it gets closer to the 3/27 deadline? I don't expect any update-worthy things to happen between now and then, so the content would likely be the same.
