So...I too am on a Seattle/UW weekend visit. Tonight, six of us were walking down by Pike's market, on a very commonly traveled road, when out of the blue some huge guy in a big coat whips out a knife, walks right up to me, and yells, "I'm gonna cut your f*cking throat!" We then proceeded to run with great vigor.

WTF SEATTLE

I know I'm not much of a "city" guy, but wow, if that's what I have to look forward to, count me out. Geez.

Yeah that doesn't happen much. Sorry you found one of the super crazies on the first go. That's part of living in a compact city though.

Haha yeah I know it was an odd occurrence. I actually visit a few times a year and this was certainly a rarity, albeit a wtf rarity. And to top it off, not ten minutes later, I witnessed some dude try to carjack someone's car by pulling a knife out and telling the guy to open his window. The guy just drove off...

Sketch =/= 1 attempted knife-stabbing + 1 attempted car jacking in the period of a few hours.

I lived in a *really* ghetto neighborhood in one of Forbes' "most miserable + violent cities" and rarely saw anything like that, even though objectively the rates of crime particularly violent crime were much higher than Seattle.

I guess it's possible but it just seems highly unlikely.

I went to school for years in the CD. I saw domestic violence once and crack dealing many times, but that is it. I've never seen a knife get pulled or a carjacking. That is some crazy ass shit.

Out of curiosity, of those who have been accepted AND applied for the Gates scholarship, what were your numbers? I was talking to a friend who was accepted, with no real softs (straight from UG), and their numbers are both below medians, but they did apply for the Gates scholarship. I am just wondering out loud if there is a boost given to those who apply for the scholarship.

This friend is fresh out of UG, below both medians, and was already accepted? Is this friend URM by chance? When did he/she go into review?

He is a 161/3.4/OOS, applied October, accepted January. He's not crazy like the rest of us so he didn't check his status checker every 12 minutes, or at all, so he just knows when he got the acceptance letter. He may have written the most elqoquent PS ever, I don't know, but I did find it odd that he was accepted already with no real softs and his numbers, while others have been waitlisted/rejected with similar/better numbers.

Wow. Congratulations to him, but this example makes it seem like there is absolutely no logic to UW's admission process at all. Maybe they just throw darts at a board or something?

OR it could be that Gates scholarship applicants received some sort of advantage...in any case, good luck to all. Still IR 12/1 here.

I finally got tired of waiting and went ahead and e-mailed the admissions office to see if they would release my decision via e-mail. They were nice enough to do so and I just found out that I'm in!!! Super excited about it I'm very interested in pursuing a joint JD/Masters of Marine Affairs through the School of Marine and Environmental Affairs. Is anyone else looking at a concurrent degree program? Best of luck to all still waiting to hear!
